...I honestly didn't think I'd get to see it until dvd release time. Luckily, my Aunt and Uncle had no idea what to do today, never have a chance to go to the movies, and really wanted to do something that avoided the outdoors. So, first we saw Despicable Me (OMG, LOVE LOVE LOVE) and the we had lunch, chilled for a bit, and went back for Inception.
I loved the movie. That's not a surprise to anyone who knows my movie tastes outside of Disney Films, Mel Brooks comedies, and Bruce Willis being a badass movies. I like thought-provking films. I like turns and twists. I deeply appreciate setting, tone, style, etc. I'm one of the few people out there who gladly admits their love and adoration for What Dreams May Come. I was pretty much going to love Inception by default alone.
I def. need to watch the film again. In a way I saw the ending coming, but I LOVE the questions it raised. Is it a dream? The idea taking hold? Does the power and purpose of the totem switch with the user, since it was Mal's and then Cobb stole it and then Saito's dudes touched it? If so, what does that mean? Was everything that came before a dream and only the very ending reality? I don't know, and I love that.
I honestly started the movie off thinking Cobb was the dead one and it was all Mal's dream. Part of me is still holding on to bits of that theory.
I thought the casting was great. Despite all the mind-blowing and the thinky-thoughtness, there's a good bit a humor. At its heart, it is an action-thriller-suspense thing. The special effects and the CGI were wonderful and seameless. Never mind bending the spoon, let's bend the whole world.
I loved the fact that in many scenes, you can hear a ticking clock in the background. That the names of the two women in the film have very important archetypal meanings (Mal, Ariadne). That the dream within a dream within a dream within a dream is so important and present. That almost every character, at some point, questions what reality really is.
Look, I love Chris Nolan's work on The Dark Knight and Batman Begins but I truly believe he shines best when he does films like this.
Now, I'm just going to think about this some more, count the days down until the dvd release when I can watch it again, and go re-watch What Dreams May Come and Memento
In other news: If I pass the drug test I had to take this morning, I will have a part-time job. I'm not worried at all about passing the drug test. I'll hear sometime next week about the full-on, all-okay, hire.
I did almost cause myself to black out yesterday as I decided to walk the 1.5 miles to possible job site in 98F weather with 90 humidity when I haven't walked like that in a while. Needless to say, I wasn't capable of walking back to the house in that state, and had to curl up inside a Starbucks until my mother could come get me. Def. getting the bike fixed until the whole car thing is worked out. I felt so bad b/c while my legs had no problem with the walk, the craptastic air quality of CLT in August made it so I couldn't breathe. And you need to be able to breathe and walk.
