As I go through my many mp3s and cds making collections to torture
aduial_peredhel with, I can't help but notice how many of my favorite band start out with the "The."
Seriously, look:
The Ramones
The Who
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
The Smiths
The Cure
The Clash
The Gaslight Anthem
The Pogues
The Umbrellas
The The
The Chieftans
The Jackson 5
The Bangles
The Boomtown Rats
The Killers
The Empires
The Decemberists
The Stone Roses
The Cranberries
The Beach Boys
The Police
The Goo Goo Dolls
The Verve Pipe
The Misfits
The Temptations (and one hundred billion other Motown acts)
The Wonders (yes, that right, I love the "That Thing You Do Soundtrack," and I am so counting them.)
And then there are those who have half a "the."
Tom Petty and THE Heartbreakers
Bruce Springsteen and THE E-Street Band
Bob Marley and THE Wailers
Prince and THE Revolution (Purple Rain for the TMFW!)
Diana Ross and THE Supremes (and again, one hundred billion other Motown acts)
And those are only some of the acts by music I own. I can only imagine the others out there. The thing that really cracks me up, is it seems like more recent bands are moving away from the "The." Of the bands listed above the only ones to come out in recent years as new acts are The Killers, The Decemberists and The Gaslight Anthem. New acts seem to be more for either one word names, catchy phrases, or what they think are cute literary allusions.
And yes, I really do have nothing better to do on my Sundays then make a list of bands with the word "the" in their names. Why do you ask?
My favorite of the Thes is hard to pick though, but I'll go with five: The Smiths, The Cure, The Clash, The Pogues and The Gaslight Anthem. I'm not going to go into The Beatles/The Rolling Stones debate, I am one of those people who honestly love and adore both and think both hold their merits and you will not make me choose between them.
I am also somewhat pissed that in AltPress recent issues, they picked 24 people from bands to list the bands which most influenced them and while The Cure gets listed twice (and I love them, I do), no one says The Clash or The Ramones. I'm sorry, if you're playing "pop-punk" you better friggin recognize your godfathers and mothers. Then again, this is where I must realize that many members of these bands are now younger than I am. At least I can take heart in the fact that these people probably now how to pronounce David Bowie's name correctly. God, I feel so old for 25 years.
