I urge everyone to go out and rent
Shakespeare Retold just to watch "The Taming of the Shrew." As modern adaptations of the Bard's work go, this one had me laughing my ass off. For the non-Shakespeare-ilk, don't worry. These are modern stories with modern language, with only the occasional use of the traditional script. I've only watched disc 2, which has "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and Shrew on it, but Shrew alone is enough. (Midsummer wasn't bad, wasn't good. Puck was the best, but I've noticed Puck is usually the best in any adaptation of the play. Stanley Tucci does remain my favorite, though, for the onscreen version.)
Anyway, Shrew has Rufus Sewell in it, so that should be enough for the eye-candy alone. But it also has Shirley Henderson as Kate, and I love her and her distinctive voice.
In other news: Computer pissed me off so much this morning I decided it was better for me to leave the house than to stay near the laptop. It would have gone flying through the window. Went down to Downtown Crossing again, since I really didn't feel like taking a shuttle bus from Park Street to Kendall Square (damn you, Red Line maintenance, damn you!). Hopefully full train access will be up again next weekend. I really need to see if the bookstores in Harvard Square have any travel books for Wales, as the huge-ass Borders on School Street is sadly lacking. I'm only planning on going to Cardiff for a day trip, but I'd at least like to see a map of the city before going. I need it to give me an idea of the area, walking time etc. I also need to see if I can find a more detailed guide book for Dublin. Like, one that lists more than just pubs and shops. I need details about art galleries and historical sites, people!
....anyway, yeah, Downtown Crossing was fun, even though everyone was out in full due to the warm and sunny weather. Got to hear a lovely band play, they used pan pipes. It was awesome.
Speaking of Boston and tourism. I used to love "Crossing Jordan," and then I moved to Quincy, MA, and learned what Boston was really like. I was watching disc 2 from season one, and Jordan mentions going to Quincy National Cemetery. A) There is no Quincy National Cemetery. There is one in IL not in MA. They probably meant Mount Wollaston, but whatever. Second, she pronounced Quincy as "Quin-Cee" when anyone who has been in the area for more than 5 mins knows it is pronounced "Quin-zee." Jordan, as a character who grew up in Boston, should have known that. Just funny little things I notice and have to go, "Wow, the researchers on this show sucked." It's like how in one of the episodes you see Nigel passing through the train cars on the subway. You, um, can't do that on the MBTA. As in, the way the cars are designed it's sort of not possible. I still like the show, but it's the little things that pull me out of it while watching.
So do not want to go to work tomorrow. But hey, as the weeks go by, so does the time in between now and my trip!
