That's interesting

Having just started, and well, finsihed the Nightrunner series this past week, I fell in love with it and had to, being my fandom-minded self, search things out. Now, clearly since the author doesn't allow fanfic (which, being the way things are these days, and that she is an author who is, you know, alive and writing right now, I understand), I find the poll she has up on her lj right now quite interesting. And different. And brave. It's really opening yourself up to your readers, and the fandom, and is something that could never have happend on such a large scale before the internet.

Of course, I, like everyone else, want to see more Alec and Seregil, but you know what I really want? Beka. Beka going through the war. Beka having to go on as the first man she loved died on the battlefield. Beka and Nyal, seeing if it goes beyond events from Traitor's Moon. I really do love her character and the fact that over three books we've seen her grow. Same with Alec.

Since I have paid a monthly fee to read original fantasy fiction online, I also don't have an issue with her asking if a fee's okay. It is her job, after all, and if it went through she'd be doing more than most fans can even hope for. And okay, so it might be balant fan service, but wouldn't you'd rather have that as an extra story than a whole novel itself? And unlike the Anita Blake series, I don't think the future Nightrunner novels are going to actually lose the plot entirely and become nothing but boring, uneeded, smut. And if that sounds bitter it's b/c yes, I am still pissed off that a series with such potential, such interesting characters, and an interesting world, just..died.

Now, after that little bit of wandering off my own beaten path...

Must answer Irish history questions so I can get some of my own writing done.

Have also made the difficult, but realistic, decision that I will be switching from the thesis track to the capstone track for my master's degree. I just can't afford to get the sources needed for my thesis (most of the books are over $150 each, b/c yes, that's what academic publishers charge) and I really can't afford another two years of graduate school. My degree will still read "Master of Arts, History," so I might as well. So, I'll do the Capstone and, hopefully, graduate by December. Then, after taking a few years, getting a good job, paying off some of my loans, I might go back to school and get a BA in anthropology or go back to my first love, Classics.

Oh, quick note on Anime Boston: I stood in line for over two hours, no joke. The Dealer's Room was kind of sad. Aritist's Alley was more like four rooms that confused me. Tired, cranky, and having stood up for 5 hours, I just left. I will go again next year, just say screw it and register for three days, take that friday off and go. Part of my issue on sat. was b/c, well, I flew home thursday night, woke-up and worked for near on 12 hours on friday, then woke-up early on saturday and stood in a never-ending line for two hours just to register. Seriously, got in line at 8:40am, got in a line (which is in one room, that line stretched from a maze in the actual registration room, to a hallway, to another hallway, to a winding maze of a line in the room I was standing in. A room the same size of the large Dealer's Room. Yes, that's how long the line was. And no, I don't have pictures as I forgot my camera), and didn't get out of line until 10:50am.

Now that I know where the covention center is (b/c getting lost in the Back Bay at 7:00 in the morning is my idea of fun)and how large of a crowd to expect, I think I am much more better prepared for next year.

Anyway, must really get back to that academic work thing.
