Yes, as soon as Crane said he had an eidetic memory, I mumbled something vaguely like "you go, Mulder." But I am enjoying the show and wondering how long they can drag it all out. I suppose as long as Supernatural can!

Although in this case it's the trying-to-be-Scullyish Mills who had a traumatically spooky childhood experience that effectively resulted in the loss of her sister. (I haven't rewatched an "X-Files" episode in ages, so when Crane announced that he had an eidetic memory, all I thought of was Carrie Wells [Poppy Montgomery] on "Unforgettable.")

My husband was annoyed by the gun joke, because Crane would've been cashiered for throwing away such a valuable weapon

That's funny, I had pretty much the same thought! Maybe a hangover from growing up on a military base.

Heh. Of course, if we were real sticklers, we might be wondering what was the official relationship between the Sheriff and Irving, who can apparently order the Sheriff's partner (what?) around.

Maybe we have it all wrong and Sheriff was his first name.
