leaves_girl: On Dark Angel, did 494 go on any missions after the disaster that was the Berrisford Agenda?
There’s a technician whose glasses remind him of the ones he wore, outside. It’s a victory-at least it’s not a failure-that he doesn’t react when he sees her. He’s done enough twitching/screaming/shaking/et weakling cetera during reeducation. He’s over that.
He understands that they don’t believe him. His next mission could’ve been carried out by a monkey. At least if a monkey could shoot accurately at over half a mile.
It’s painless. The little figures show up in his scope. He pulls the trigger. There’s arm-waving, which just provides him the next target, and the next. He has to go up close to finish off the one who made it into a bush. She probably would’ve bled out anyway, barely gurgling and skin ashy under the blood by the time he found her. He snaps her neck and it’s over.
She doesn’t look anything like anyone he knows.
Not that it would have mattered if she had, of course. Of course.
They (the real humans, the Manticore masters) like him to swagger. From what he’s seen, a human with a face like his would. It’s realistic. The fact that they care means he’s going to get another chance out in the field, a real infiltration mission. He doesn’t think about that much. When it finally happens, he’ll try not to think about it at all.
He’s still on punishment detail. That’s okay. It’s not that bad; he can do drills until the skin rubs off of his hands (and has). He’ll do what he’s told.
He certainly knows better now than to take responsibility for anything else.
