Yesterday at 5:00 the general contractor came by to take measurements and pictures, and to discuss the things that need to be done to repair rooms and drywall and such. It looks like they will replace the bathroom cabinet, and since the water seeped up from the toilet base they may also take that up and put a new wax ring in for me. (I told him I'd even clean the toilet before he started work so it wouldn't be so bad for him. Score some points for the homeowner with that offer.)
He was surprised that the restoration company hadn't already taken out drywall since there was black water involved. He's going to talk to them today. (Speaking of whom, I already have their bill ... {choke} At least most of it is on the insurance company, but my goodness!) And there's apparently ways I can mitigate paying some of that deductible if I do some of the work myself. Like replacing my own wallpaper in the bathroom and possibly in the living room as well if they cut drywall out. He's going to talk to the insurance company about that today, too.
I will also add that the general contractor came at 5:00 and we ended up talking until 7:00. Very nice man.
This morning the carpet guy is scheduled to come at 8:00. I'm going find out from him if I get to choose my color of carpet, even though I know they have to replace with the same type of pad and quality of carpeting. If I get to choose, then I'm going see if I can get a nice medium brown.
Also, once I have an idea of how long it will take before the carpet can be laid, I will be making plans to paint my paneled walls. With the carpet out, now seems like the time to just go ahead and do it. I suppose I should also check to see if the paneling can simply come down without doing too much damage to the drywall it's attached to ... that would really be the most desirable way to go. But I'm a little afraid of what damage I might do/find in the process of getting the panels down. I can justify $100 worth of paint and wood fill for the knotholes. I can't justify or afford who knows how much to replace all the drywall if it gets torn up.
I am also making a list of things I need to buy (like bleach and a spray bottle), things I just need to get from somewhere (small to mid-size boxes), and things I need to do (clean toilet, etc.) so I can get started prepping the house for all the work that's going to be happening in the very near future.
