011. Odds and Ends
Ashlee set another box down in their new house. She wiped a hand across her sweaty forehead just as Coop walked in. His muscles flexed as carried one of the heavier boxes labeled Ash’s pictures. She grinned and winked at him.
“Are there bricks in here or something?” He asked this with a huff, slowly setting it to the ground. She giggled and walked over to him.
“How is it possible we had this much crap at the Beacon?” She asked. He laughed, wrapping his arms around her.
“I don’t know Mrs. Bradshaw. It was probably all of your little knick knacks or whatever you call those things.” He said before placing a kiss to her forehead. She pushed him off her.
“Coop! I’m all sweaty and you are too.” Coop pulled her to him firmly.
“I don’t care how sweaty we are. I can kiss my wife if I want to.” He said it firmly, a twinkle in his eyes. He couldn’t stop calling her his wife. That one word made his heart swell. He didn’t know any one person could be this happy.
Ashlee leaned into him, relaxing and looked up at him.
“How about we leave the rest of our stuff and relax a little?” She asked, gleaming mischievously. Coop raised an eyebrow and smirked.
“Oh really? And would this relaxing take place in our bedroom?” He asked. She smiled and shrieked as he scooped her up.
“Coop! Put me down!” He shook his head.
“Nope, I can pick my wife up whenever I want to.”
012. Tea
“Alright daddy and mommy sit here and don’t move till I get back.” At Audrey’s command Coop and Ashlee nodded, both trying to hide their grins as their daughter marched out of her room. She left them sitting Indian style at her small table, teacups and plates set up nicely. Next to Coop sat Jane, Audrey’s favorite doll and next to Ashlee was Henry, Audrey’s stuffed bear.
“Did you make this?” Coop asked, picking up one of the cookies. Ashlee nodded, reaching over smacking his hand. He snatched it away with shock. Ashlee glared.
“She told us not to eat yet.” At his wife’s serious tone Coop chuckled.
“I just wanted a bite.” He said.
“Daddy, I said no eating till I came back!” Audrey cried walking in, cradling her teapot in her hands. Coop smiled at his daughter and Ashlee bit back a laugh.
“Sorry baby.” He said. Audrey walked around, pouring tea into each cup and both parents stared at her smiling as she carefully set the teapot back down.
“Alright everyone, let’s eat.” Coop snatched a cookie up quickly, his stomach growling. Their daughter had held him captive in her room for an hour while she and Ashlee had made the cookies and tea.
“Is it good?” Coop nodded and smiled at his daughter. She stared at him hopefully with bright blue eyes. Staring back at his wife who was grinning right back he reached under the table and clutched her hand.
“Drink the tea daddy.” Coop gingerly picked up the tea and caught a glint in Ashlee’s eyes as he took a sip. He coughed, trying not to spit it out.
“What is that?” He cried. Ashlee held a hand to her mouth and Audrey huffed, placed both hands on her hips.
“Isn’t it good daddy?” Audrey asked. Coop turned panicked eyes to Ashlee as he shoved a cookie in his mouth to get rid of the aftertaste. Ashlee grinned back at him cheekily.
“It’s very good baby.” He said nodded his head quickly. Audrey poured him some more and he stared at the cup in fear.
“Well drink more. Mommy let me make it.” Coop turned gleaming eyes on his wife, who was now outright laughing.
“Oh she did, did she?” Audrey nodded and then turned to Ashlee.
“Mommy, you have to drink too.” Ashlee coughed, gulping and Coop smiled evilly at her.
Payback was fun.
013. Twisted
Ashlee’s thoughts swirled through her mind as if twisting against her will. She walked out of Company quickly, making it to the alley before she lost it. Sobs racked her body as she slid down the side of her car. Coop had just brushed her off, leaving her without much thought and she had snapped. How had everything gotten so out of control?
She had broken up with Coop to find herself, but now she felt the most lost and confused than she had ever felt. Was this part of finding yourself? Hitting rock bottom? She had split ways with the love of her life to find the truth about herself, but now it felt as if only lies fogged her life.
She stilled loved Coop. That was the only truth that shined through. Her love of her job, her few dates with Cory, even her friendships were all lies though. She had lost the weight and she still felt ugly. Ashlee still felt like a light was bearing down on her and she couldn’t escape. The few times she had run into him, those feelings had melted away and she was Ashlee again, the beautiful, funny, and loveable girl that everyone knew. But without him, she was a stranger. And it scared the hell out of her.
She needed Coop back in her life before she truly lost herself.
014. Echo
Coop couldn’t write. He couldn’t go to Company or to C02. He couldn’t talk to Daisy or his dad. He sure as hell couldn’t go back to the Beacon. Everything reminded him of her. It was like Ashlee had left her footprint throughout Springfield; one he couldn’t escape.
He sat in the alley, his arms wrapped around his knees, his head down and tears flowed freely. It had been a month since she had been killed; one month since he had died as well. He looked down next to him and picked up the revolver laying there. A small part of him felt like he was betraying her by doing this. But the other part, the large part of him that kept him up at night screaming was urging him on.
Guilt and anger were his two constant companions these days. The guilt was hard to feel. He was guilty of so many things; the main one being that he didn’t fix things with her. The guilt usually led to tears and a fetal position in his bed. But the anger was different. Oh the anger he liked. It burned in him until it completely consumed him. He liked anger. Anger was easy. It flowed out so many ways. He was angry at her for leaving. He was angry at himself for letting her leave. He was angry at the town for trying to move on. But most of all, he was angry at that son of a bitch who had killed her.
A drunken mistake they called it. That usually sent him over the edge. A drunken mistake had taken his soul mate. And that bastard would pay.
Clutching the handle he stood up and made his way to the edge of the courthouse. They were coming out now. Coop watched Doris leave, tears in her eyes. He gripped the gun.
“Don’t worry Doris. We will have justice.”
Spotting the bastard Coop smiled. It would all be over soon.
015. Soothe
Coop sat outside his father’s restaurant too ashamed to go in. His father had been right. He had loved Beth and had tried so hard to get her to love him back. ‘God he was an idiot.’ Throwing him away seemed easy for women these days. Brushing a lone tear away he sat hunched over, shivering in the cold.
“Coop, what’s wrong?” The voice surprised him and he froze in place. ‘Why her? Why her of all people?’ He looked up and Ashlee stared at him, worry in her eyes. His heart jumped but then he scoffed bitterly finally letting the anger take hold.
“Do you care?” She opened her mouth before closing it again and closing her eyes, her face a mask of pain.
“I do deserve that I guess.” She walked over and sat down keeping space between them. It didn’t seem that long ago to him that he would have had her in his arms, caressing her blonde locks through his fingers.
“Coop, I heard about Beth.” She said hesitantly. Coop flinched. She reached over and took his hand.
“I’m sorry. She’s an idiot.” He laughed. It was laugh of resentment and hurt. Ashlee stared at him, pain flashing in her eyes.
“I’m an idiot too.” She whispered. His heart skipped a beat and he let himself finally take her in. She might have lost weight, but she was still the same Ashlee, beautiful in all ways. His Ashlee.
He squeezed her hand and she smiled at him.
“Coop, would you like to have coffee with me?” She asked. He could read the uncertainty in her voice and he thought hard. She had hurt him. He had tried to move on with Beth but she had hurt him as well. But his heart was doing somersaults right now as if it was coming home and that was something he had never felt with Beth.
Finally he nodded and her face broke out into a relieved smile. It was infectious and he smiled at her too, his own feeling of a relief flooding his body. She stood up, pulling him with her.
“Great. I uh…I’m glad.” She said stuttering. He smiled.
“Me too.”
They walked away still holding hands.
