not dead.

I despair of any kind of summary, so a few random points, instead.

I think the weather's starting to turn -- we're finally seeing cloudy mornings again, and yesterday was sort of misting. It's nice. I'd missed that sort of thing. When I get off the bus downtown for work, I can smell the water; my job is about three blocks from the waterfront, and this morning especially, the smell of brine is vivid.

The water is so much more a part of the city here than it was in Philly. There were, yes, two rivers coming in to meet in Philadelphia and empty into the sea. But they were sort of...walled off, used for industry and maybe for crew teams, but generally separate from everything else around them. Here we have low bridges and pieces of the city on islands and there are little docks for private boats everywhere. It feels entirely different.

I'm going to miss this job, and not only for the location (Kiwi and I can ride the same bus!); it runs out in two weeks, but it's been so good to me, work that I feel really confident in and that pays well and that I'm doing with people that, by and large, I like. There's a bit of cognitive dissonance on the class issue -- we do educational development stuff here, and when the project leaders talk about classes of eight or fewer, or talking schools into buying multi-thousand-dollar technology equipment to be able to use the software that goes with it, it seems like they might as well be on a different planet from the classes that greyhoundliz teaches. So that's...very strange, and a little uncomfortable, but I do like what I'm doing.

Next weekend we are off to Canada -- my first time there, and the train is surprisingly cheap -- for the weekend, staying with people we know from fandom and nominally attending a con. Am most excited about a) meeting people, and b) seeing Vancouver. But I'm sure there will be fun things at the con, too. With any luck they won't even be expensive fun things.

And off I go. Manuscripts in need of copyediting, etc etc.
