Blush Response is an electronic music project, founded in 2008 by Joey Blush in New York, NY. Joey is the only official member of Blush Response, and is entirely responsible for its sound and direction. Blush Response’s music crosses many genres, from hard hitting industrial rock, to EBM/dance music, to ambient and instrumental pieces.
The first single, “Reduce You”, was released on June 2nd, 2009.
When performing live, Blush Response appears as a full live band, with Hayden Payne (Void Vision/Dream Affair) on guitars, Tom Napack (Dangerous Muse) on Percussion and Samples, and Tyler Burns on synthesizers.
The first album, We Are Replicants, was released on May 1, 2010 on every major online outlet.

Q: When did you start making music and how you ended up with such specific electronic sound?
Joey: I started when I was around 16, though I had always been into electronic music. I remember hearing The Prodigy's "Breathe" for the first time when I was around 7 or 8 and just being blown away by the sound. I had no idea how to do anything at all, and wouldn't for a while, but I was already hooked on synthesizers. Around the time I turned 16 I moved to new york and made friends with a bunch of musicians, who convinced me to pick up a synthesizer, and so I did.
As for the sound of Blush Response itself, I wanted to make music that you could fuck to.
Q: Where do you get your inspirations from and what musicians influenced you the most?
Joey: I listen to a lot of different types of music, I don't like pigeonholing myself to one genre, because I feel the best art comes from a variety of sources. With that said, I'd have to say my biggest influences are first and foremost Trent Reznor, Martin Gore, Coil, Skinny Puppy, Chris Corner, and Autechre. I listen to so much music so its hard to pick one exact influence, but those are definitely the first ones to come off the top of my head.
Q: Where did the name "Blush Response" come from?
Joey: Its from the movie Blade Runner, which if you haven't seen I highly recommend you picking up. See if you can spot it there!
Q: Are your lyrics and music based on your personal experiences?
Joey: Almost entirely, except when I'm trying to tell a story or inspired by an outside source. "Square" for example would be a personal song, while a song like "Nothing to Hide" is inspired by Blade Runner itself. I sort of have/had an unhealthy obsession with this movie, and I imagined that song to be what Roy Batty was thinking as he came to Earth.
Q: Tell us a little bit about the process of making "We are Replicants" and what's the story behind the title?
Joey: The title again, is a Blade Runner reference. I liked the idea that Replicants were robots that were almost indistinguishable from humans, and yet in the movie they acted more human than the humans in the movie. I felt like as a whole our society is devolving into a media obsessed world where we are just robots spewing out information, be it on sites like facebook, twitter, or even foursquare. Sites that invade our privacy at our own free will and basically create the big brother image. Everyone is a drone in a world where there is no privacy. Its funny if you look at 1984 and the concept of a telescreen, which is a television that can watch you while you watch it, and then you look at all of our computers that have webcams built right into the front, and you see the reality is not that far from the fiction...
Q: Do you plan on getting involved with any record labels?
Joey: In short: if they pay me a lot of damn money, want to give me full on support and creative control, and let me dictate every inch of how I am handled, right down to what font is used on my press releases. So basically never.
Q: Will you keep on giving away your music for free along with putting it on itunes and physical releases?
Joey: Due to the nature of the internet today, music is inherently free. If it is released, it is available for free somewhere, and there is probably porn of it. So I intend to give out every release for free digitally, and people who want to pay to support me can purchase on retailers like itunes or amazon, or buy physical product from me. (which is coming very soon) As for things like CDs and Vinyls, the thought has been floating around of doing a 500 record limited edition run of W.A.R, but that won't be any time this year. Right now its about gaining exposure.
Q: What kind of music do you personally listen to on the daily basis?
Joey: I think I answered that question above, but right now I've really been hooked on a lot of Autechre. Their new albums Oversteps and Move of Ten are fucking masterworks as usual. Its disappointing to me that there aren't many new bands really out there kicking ass. Most artists who are really doing something kick ass today have at least been around since the 90s. I've been listening to a lot of Modwheelmood as well (and hey! they are a good "new" band). I also should give a shout to my friend Christopher Jon in I, Parasite. He just put out a full length and an EP and they are both fantastic.
Q: Would you like to work with any other musicians sometime in the future?
Joey: Well I've got a couple remixes in the pipeline, and I did a remix for Dangerous Muse's "I Want it All" a while back. As for the rest of the stuff, you will be hearing about it shortly!
Q: And what are your plans for the nearest future?
Joey: The above mentioned remixes and collaborations, and a 5 or 6 song EP that I am putting out hopefully this year. I actually put a sampler out on my website a couple of days ago, you can check it out at http://music.wearereplicants.com
