George Rivers

My father comes from a big family.

He was one of 7 children. 6 boys, one girl. His brothers Joe and Bill passed away within a week of each other in 1994. So, there was his sister and 3 brothers left. Claude, Charlie and George.

A few years ago, Uncle George was working at a construction zone. He was working on a railroad crossing, and some idiot pulled out of a shopping center and was looking back at oncoming traffic and completely missed that my uncle was standing in the middle of the road. He was hit and his spine, legs, ribs and skull were broken. He had severe brain damage and they medivaced him to the trauma center in Orlando. They said he wouldn't make it through the night. George was a fighter. Tough to the core. Gave the big F-U to the docs and not only pulled through, but made it quite a few more years.

Three years ago, he was diagnosed with bone cancer. It was bad. They expected him to make it another 3-6 months but that was it. After all he'd done to get through the trauma and he wasn't going to make it past that. Well, after a few months of treatment, it went into remission. The unbeatable was beaten back. Again, George stuck his tongue out at the doctors who had punched his ticket already.

Two months ago, the cancer came back. Very aggressive. Last month, they put him in the hospital and said he wouldn't make it through the week and it was Wednesday. The next day, he was up and about. A few days later, he was told he wouldn't make it through the night. This went on for several weeks.

This morning at 9:50 am, he passed away peacefully and is no longer in pain. He was told over and over again, he was done for, and he kept sticking his tongue out at them and finally, he couldn't keep fighting.

He will be missed sorely.
