Michael and David strolled down the street. Occasionally, they peered through shop windows to see the items on display. David, easily the merrier of the two, actually skipped down the sidewalk, paying no mind to the stares of passersby. Michael chuckled and jogged to keep up with him.

"Slow down, Dave!" he called. David laughed triumphantly and ran even faster.

"Gotta catch me!" Michael heard distinctly as David disappeared down a hill. Groaning, he picked up his pace. Just as Michael thought that David had vanished, he spotted the short, lanky figure in the front of a store. David had frozen in place, his eyes glued to an assortment of sweets inside. His brown eyes glistened with excitement. Michael’s eyes widened and his heart filled with dread.

"No. No, no, no, no." He grabbed David by the neck of his shirt and proceeded to drag him away from the window.

"Michael," David whined. "I want to go in! Please?" David stood his ground and didn’t take his eyes off of the colorful candy inside.

"No." Michael said adamantly. "David, you know what happens when you eat sugar." Michael took a hold of David’s arm and pulled.

"Come on! Just this once? Pretty, pretty please with sugar on top?"

Michael did a double take. "Pretty---" Michael started to say. "You are thirty years old." Michael said, slightly disturbed and getting very, very tired.

David tore his eyes away from the window momentarily and looked straight into Michael’s eyes. David ran his index finger down Michael’s chest. "I’ll be your best friend." he taunted.

Michael groaned deep in his throat. He never could resist David for long. Michael sighed dramatically, a sure sign that he had surrendered. "Just this once."

Just as soon as he had gotten the words out of his mouth, David was gone. Michael sighed and looked through the window, still feeling the ghost of David’s finger on his chest. Sighing silently to himself, Michael followed David into the store. The bell chimed as he opened the squeaky door. Everywhere he looked he saw sweets. However, there was no sign of the candy crazed kid that had left him just seconds ago. Puzzled, Michael walked slowly around. The aisles were short, but there were at least ten of them stocked to the fullest with hundreds of colorful wrappers and candy bars. Finally, Michael found David on his knees in front of a large chocolate selection. Michael’s jaw fell to the floor. David was piling bar after bar of chocolate into his arms. When they got too full, a bar or two would fall to the floor, but that didn’t distract David. He cleaned out an entire box of Hershey’s chocolate, then moved on to the Doves.

"David, my God." was all Michael could manage. David looked up at him, and Michael burst out laughing. The image of David kneeling on the floor, with his arms full of chocolate and eyes full of nothing, didn’t nearly complete the picture that Michael was now seeing. There was also the largest lollipop Michael had ever seen, stuck right behind David’s ear.

"What," Michael managed between chuckles. "What…is…that?" He pointed to David’s ear.

Scowling, David said, "Shut up and help me carry some of these." And with that, David stood and shoved the whole lot of chocolate into Michael’s arms.

"Are you quite finished?" Michael asked, all seriousness coming back to him now. David just laughed.

"Hell, no." He raced off to a rather colorful selection of jellybeans. Michael shook his head in disbelief and stared after David. His eyes and heart swelled with love. He watched David put scoop after scoop of jellybeans into a plastic bag. Michael sighed and adjusted his arms so the ton of chocolate would rest neatly in his grasp. David filled the bag as far as he could, twisted it, and tied it off. He rushed back over to Michael. David, much to Michael’s horror, put the bag on top of all the chocolate and told him, "Follow me." Michael watched David run off to another colorful section and followed him meekly.

David was again kneeling on the floor, packages of gummies and licorice in his eager hands and littered on the floor around him.

"David," Michael said with a deep sigh. "I think that’s enough for today." David went on piling candy into his arms, ignoring Michael’s pleas. "David?" Michael repeated. The man still ignored him. Now Michael, having no use of his arms, lifted his leg and kicked David gently on his back.

"Ouch!" David exclaimed, dropping all of his packages and grabbing the painful area with his hands. "That really hurt! What’d you do that for, Mikey?" Michael smiled at David for using his nickname. Then he remembered the dull throbbing pain in his arms and all but seriousness faded.

"Look at all of this." Michael exclaimed. "Just take a good look at me. Do you see anything wrong here?"

David stared blankly back at Michael. "No."

Had Michael had the ability, he would have clapped a hand over his forehead in irritation. Instead, he spoke very slowly and clearly, "Look at all the candy you have put into my arms. I think you’ve got enough to hold you over for awhile."

David took awhile, but he finally got the hint. He gathered up all of the candy on the floor and they headed over to the registers.

There was a single man behind the counter, and as all of David’s candy was piled up there, the man’s eyes grew wider and wider. He looked at the two of them from behind his round, bespectacled eyes, then back at the candy, then back at them again. Michael stood there, trying to get the feeling back into his arms by shaking them out. Gradually, the pile became smaller and bags became fuller as the obviously stunned worker began to ring them up.

Michael and David looked at the scanner with very different expressions. Michael watched the price of the candy go higher and higher, while David watched impatiently as the man took his time to check them out.

"Your total is $54.73." The man said simply.

Michael, not especially surprised, took out his wallet and paid the man for all the candy. David took one full bag, and Michael took the other. They walked out of the store.

In the car, Michael drove while David sat in the backseat, surrounded by the candy he had dumped out onto the seats on either side of him. Michael drove, savoring the silence that consumed the car. Then a thought occurred to him.

"David," Michael said warningly. "You'd better not be eating in my car." Still, there was silence in the backseat. Michael took a deep breath and closed his eyes, mentally preparing himself for whatever he was about to see. He let out the breath and warily looked into the rearview mirror. "OH MY GOD!!" Michael stared wide eyed at David.

"What?" an innocent-sounding David asked from the backseat. There was drying chocolate coating his beard, and he had a licorice rope protruding from his bottom lip. Michael looked on sickly as he watched David’s coma-inducing ritual. Michael squinted in disgust as David devoured half of the chocolate and three bags of licorice in less than fifteen minutes.

"Heaven," David sang at the top of his lungs. "I’m in heaven. And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak!"

Michael couldn’t help but smile and hum along as David sang. He was simply irresistible.

Tonight’s going to be hell, Michael thought with an internal groan. Michael tried to plot several escape routes should David’s sugar rush kick in at any point during the night.

The arrived at the house and David jumped out of the car as soon as it had rolled to a stop. Michael got out slowly and leaned on the door frame for support. David ran up to the front door and fiddled with his keys, letting himself into the house. With a final desperate look at the now cluttered backseat of his brand new car, Michael reluctantly followed David into the house.

Three hours later, Michael reclined on the couch, his fingers massaging the bridge of his nose, while David circled him. "Hey Michael," he said speedily. "Michael Michael Michael Michael Michael Michael!" David said, the syllables jumbling together. Michael dared not look up as David hopped behind his head, using the couch’s edge to lift himself off of the ground. "Michael!" David repeated impatiently.

"What?" Michael said crossly.

David stopped hopping and leaned his face over Michael’s face. "Open your eyes." He said in sing-song.

Michael warily uncovered his eyes and glared at David’s upside-down face. "Yes, David?" He managed through gritted teeth.

"David stuck out his bottom lip and gave Michael his best puppy-dog look. "I love you."

Michael immediately felt bad. Michael looked at the angelic face that he loved and wanted to make up for everything he did today to hurt David. He only wanted to kiss David and make him happy again. So that’s what he did. He pecked David’s lips and it turned into a long, deep kiss.

Acting only on a whim, Michael grabbed the tops of David’s arms and flipped him over the top of the couch. David landed sitting comfortably on Michael’s lap. David angled himself so he could lean into Michael’s embrace again. They broke apart, both shades of brown gazing intensely into the other.

"I love you, David Cook." Michael said sincerely.

David smiled and hooked his arms around his love’s shoulders and buried his head into the crook of Michael’s neck.
