[oom] They Call It A Blue Screen

It had sounded perfect, she thought.  Perfect.

Small.  Light.  Fits on an armband.  Activated with a single touch, keyed to the wearer's DNA. It supposedly lasts for three hours continuous use without needing a recharge.  Sure, Bar had mentioned there might be some harmless side effects.

Initially, she'd been rather enamoured of the way it looked. ( Read more... )

"Going to be in there much longer?"

Oblivious werewolf is oblivious.

"Uh... maybe?"

"Shite shite shite."

"Richard? Um. I have a -- slight -- problem."

Richard eyes the door warily.

"Are we out of toilet paper?"

His answer is a light and nervous laugh.

"No, no."

Oh how to explain this.

"Bar made sure to tell me that the side effects were harmless. And temporary. I should be -- fine. In a bit."

How temporary!? She never remembers to ask the important questions.

"What side effects?"

He's sounding a wee bit concerned, now, though still wary.

The door opens a crack.

Her hand emerges to wave at him.

And then her arm, all the way to the shoulder.

It's a lovely shade of blue.

She peeks through the door and sees his expression.

And slits her eyes at him.

"Oh, see if I ever do you any favours again, Captain Ryan."

"You're blue," he says a bit dumbly, sniffing at her.

"Why are you blue?"

She pulls back from the door, pacing back across the bathroom to retrieve her robe and slipping into it.

"Here," she hands him something that looks remarkably like a wrist watch, only there is no display. "Don't turn it on."

She stands with her arms crossed, her voice sparking with irritation as she recites the specs. "Man portable cloaking device, lasts three hours. DNA keyed to the operator. No visual distortion, by wearer or viewer. One mild side effect, harmless, temporary, lasting an unknown duration."

He takes the device very gingerly, not wanting to accidentally set it off.

He looks at it, looks at her, starts to smile affectionately, and suddenly finds himself fighting not to smirk at her.

Her eyebrow rises and she can't help but echo that smirk.

"This would be the part where you," she drawls, her voice pitched low, "say, 'Why thank you River, for selflessly experimenting with the alien technology, so that I might use it in good health and peace of mind.'"

"Yes, thank you, River," he answers, openly grinning now.

Beat.

"I think I'll go ask Bar for a camera now."

She slits her eyes at him, sidling across the floor and sliding up to him. "You wouldn't dare."

Her hand is trailing down his forearm, over his wrist to his hand and she presses her thumb against the edge of the device. The field actually covers both of them, she notes.

"Oh look. Now you're blue too."

...Ryan has not been distracted from his quest the way he thought he was going to be distracted.

Woe is he, on so many levels.

"No! What did you do!"

He sounds rather distressed, poor fellow.

"Made you invisible," she purrs, leaning against him. While they are touching, it's a contiguous field, and she can see him. She turns to look in the mirror, and yes, they're both cloaked. "Look."
