Serenity travelled through the black to her next destination. In her shuttle, Inara brushed the beaded chain that hang from her neck and wept.
Flashback
Inara sat in her room in Madrassa House when there was a knock on the door. “Enter.”
Nandi slipped in, “I’m sorry but I’m leaving before graduation. I feel confused but when I talked to Mistress Sheydra for advice, she told me that there was nothing wrong with me.”
Inara swallowed, “Can I help?”
“No thank you but take this as a reminder of our friendship.” She took a beaded chain from her neck.
End Flashback
Inara wondered why she had remembered Nandi. There was a knock on her door. “Enter.”
Zoe stepped inside, “You have a transmission from Nandi.”
Inara got up and headed out.
Much Later
Nandi was dead but her people had survived. Her last words were, “Inara, I am sorry for leaving you.”
