Summary: Elanor Gamgee receives a gift from the past.
The old shed had been there as long as Elanor Gamgee could remember. It was refurbished but the style was old. What could be inside? It was off limits to all the Gamgee children. Rose had given every child a stern lecture about it. The hinges creaked and the door locked so sneaking in was not an option. There was no other entrance and no windows.
Rose called to Elanor, “Follow me.”
“But there are wedding preparations.”
“They can wait.” Down the cobblestone path to the old shed, Elanor followed her mother. Rose unlocked the door after oiling the hinges. She slipped in. “Come on. It’s alright.”
Elanor carefully moved in and looked around. Behind her, Rose closed and locked the door. Rose lit the oil lamp she had carried. She sneezed at the dust. “Sit daughter. I have a story to tell you.”
The chair creaked as Elanor sat down. “A story? But I’ve heard all the stories you told about the War and how Da came home to marry you.”
“And the ones about the Shire?”
“Yes Ma.”
“This one is different. You remember hearing about Lobelia Sackville-Baggins and how she went home to Hardbottle.”
“She died the year I was born.”
“Right but she left a legacy. She had no children so she gifted it to me to be given to my first daughter.” Rose grabbed the lamp and headed for a chest. It looked old but it sparkled in the light. “She packed this chest while I watched, pregnant with what turned out to be you.” She took a key from her pocket and put it in the lock. “You open it. It’s yours.”
Elanor turned the key and unlocked the chest. She pushed the lid back and looked inside. Her mother brought the lamp closer. There were several bundles tied with ribbon. She took them out and then unwrapped each one. There were twelve silver spoons, an umbrella, a silver nibbed pen, and a lace handkerchief.. “What do these mean?”
Rose smiled. “The spoons she hid in her umbrella and took from Bag End. The pen looks like one Bilbo had.” She shone the light, “Yes, see BB engraved on it.” She reached for the handkerchief. “It’s heavy.” She carefully opened it. “The locket that Otho gave her when they married. It must have been hard after he died.”
“Bring the lamp closer.” She reached inside and took out a rolled scroll. “Hold the lamp closer.” She unrolled the scroll and read, To the daughter of Sam and Rose Gamgee. Treasure these gifts. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins.”
Rose smiled. “Well, I guess there are more stories to tell about a great lady who suffered greatly.”
Rose picked up the treasures. “And I will look forward to hearing them.”
