Harvelle’s Roadhouse was full of activity. In a corner, Ash was busy working on his computer. The clack of keys was a constant sound. A list of requests was on a paper at his side. He crossed one off and continued to the next.
At the bar was Ellen Harvelle. She was mixing drinks and answering questions. “No, haven’t seen him since May.” She set a beer in front of the man. “He was heading to New Mexico. Something about a vampire nest.”
“Thanks Ellen. Maybe I’ll head to New Mexico.”
Jo Harvelle walked in. She was carrying a case. “Where should I put it Mom?”
Ellen looked up. “What’s in there?”
“The vegetables you ordered.”
“Take it to the storeroom and open it. Fill the open shelves.”
“Sure and then what?”
“I’ll let you know.”
The storeroom was dark. Jo flipped the light on. She put the box on the floor and slit it open. Inside were bags and boxes. Taking a knife, she started to open boxes and then the bags. Soon the shelves were full with bright red tomatoes, sleek purple eggplants, heads of broccoli and cauliflower, ears of corn wrapped in sheaves and a bin full of mushrooms. She cut the radishes off the leaves and filled a bowl with them. The tops would go to the compost heap outside.
Jo headed back inside. “I’m done. What do you need?”
Ellen looked at her. “Head into the kitchen. Wash the dishes before dinner.”
“Sure Mom. Should I start dinner after that?”
“Good idea. The hunters will be hungry after a day on the road.”
Once the dishes were finished, Jo worked on dinner. The stew had been simmering since morning. She took the biscuits out of the fridge and put them on the counter. There were pies waiting to be sliced and ice cream in the freezer. Just another night at the Roadhouse.
