YE DAMNED WHALE!

I watched this movie on Reel 13 last night. (Even after all that happened with the Roadshow, my love for 13 will never fade.)

My friends, I have to tell you, that shit was INTENSE. I don't care if Gregory Peck thought that he was too young to play Ahab; he was fucking spellbinding. The movie was a little long but I really loved it. In general I love historical dramas from the 1950s as they all take themselves so damn seriously but often are completely inaccurate. I am no whaling expert, but I do know more than most about 19th century life, especially in New England, and I was impressed by the pains this movie took to make whaling life as gritty as possible. The actors did look like they had been at sea for months, which is something, let me tell you, compared to the flawlessly clean Romans in films like, I dunno, The Robe. And the part with Gregory Peck strung up among the harpoons on Moby Dick at the end? Genuinely disturbing! This one gets an A- from me. I'll take Gregory Peck stomping around a whaling ship on a fake peg leg and practically foaming at the mouth any day of the week!
