We fear things in proportion to our ignorance of them.

Molly is an American Staffordshire Terrier, which is a close relative to the American Pit Bull; since she is related, she is under harsh legislation by the Ontario government, as you possibly very well know. This angers me considerably because she is a very people-friendly dog and extremely well-mannered around children. Jeremy's mother actually discovered her through an ad on Facebook, so Jer contacted the owner and we adopted her shortly thereafter.

When Jer and I first got Molly, we realized that she had a tendency to be very dog-aggressive, which had us both questioning our abilities to train her and her willingness to learn. But we also soon realized that she is only dog-aggressive when it comes to Golden Retrievers, for reasons that we do not know. (The previous owner mentioned none of this to us, by the way.)

Although this is still an issue that needs to be addressed, she is progressing beautifully with our help and the advice of a friend who fosters and rehabiliates pit bulls. And since dogs like her are under such harsh scrutiny right now, I want to help Molly reach her full potential as a well-trained and obedient dog because she will serve as one more example that defies the current stereotype. Pit bulls lease large amounts of real estate in my heart and I will never understand why or how people can breed them specifically for dog-fighting or outlaw them for reasons blamed entirely on fear and ignorance. It's ridiculous and inhumane.

Speaking of ridiculous and inhumane, the law about not accepting the pups or accepting then killing them just makes me sick. Why can't the law state that THS just accept the pups and then spay/neuter them when they come of age? What a tragic waste. But I'm glad to hear that the adoption process people have to go through to own a pit is thorough. That weeds out a great lot of people who would just use them for fighting. Has the THS adopted out many pits since you've worked there?
