"Where are you going?" a voice called out almost innocently as Aiden stepped out from where he'd been leaning against the barracks, "It's kind of early to be going somewhere."

He couldn't see her very well in the dim light; she was just a shape right now. But it didn't look like a familiar shape and he had to wonder about that after the morning's letter. He smiled impishly and tried to look as innocent as possible. No one suspects the kid, right?

Jaime squeaked, and kind of jumped, but then relaxed a very tiny bit when she realized the voice belonged to neither fake!Mal, nor Sylar. She turned, squinting a little in the dimness. "I don't really think it's any of your business, where I'm going," she said before she shrugged. "Going to breakfast," she decided.

That actually seemed like a sound plan, though she wondered if she could trust anything here to be eaten. Maybe it was all poisoned.

Which was mostly a ridiculous thought, but ... well.

"You're a little bit jumpy for someone who just wants Cheerios," he pointed out helpfully, "I'm guessing you're not from here."

His brows raised as if challenging her, and Aiden waited for the response. He already knew the answer, mostly. She wasn't from around here and she was probably scared shitless. He grinned.

"Of course I'm not from here," Jaime replied. "But neither are you, right? You were somewhere else before you were dragged here."

Oh, she knew what he'd meant, but it was easier to jump onto the sarcasm and hide behind that than it was to try to play with any sort of logic.

"Technicality," he replied with a shrug, "You know what I mean. You're one of them, aren't you? One of the ones that's from the other side."

He looked her up and down; she didn't look like much.

"So what do you do?" he demanded with the utter confidence only a child can have.

"I'm a catalyst," she said with a shrug. Fuck, if he didn't know what she did already, he didn't need to know. "I don't really do anything," she continued. "What do you do?" she replied.

Blue eyes flicked up and down the hallway before resettling on him, studying him curiously.

He couldn't say he believed that, but then he supposed he wouldn't be particularly truthful in her position.

"I'm a mutant," he replied easily enough, "I bend things. Well, more like I twist them."

He almost laughed at how innocent that sounded. But then, maybe not. He wouldn't be here if he were innocent.

Jaime cringed a little at the idea of him twisting - or bending - a person. Specifically her. She wondered if there was any sort of stipulation against killing them today. There hadn't been anything in the letter.

Which might or might not mean anything. "Sounds ... um. Sounds like fun," Jaime said as she started to head toward one of the doors that hopefully led out.

"It is," he agreed, trailing after her, "I mean, things snap back after a while, but ... sometimes it only takes a while, you know. Limbs are frail things..."

He trailed off, grinning a bit, and he was sorely tempted to demonstrate. She didn't look nearly scared enough of him but she did look a great deal like someone to play with.

Jaime shuddered, and wanted Mal to be here. She wanted Mal to protect her. Hell, she'd settle for Jayne at this point. Someone ... with a gun or a wand. Someone bigger and stronger than her. Someone ... familiar.

That was it. She'd settle for someone she knew. Safety in numbers, and all that.

Aware he was likely going to continue following her, Jaime continued to walk, hoping if she just ignored him, he'd go away.

Aiden quickly realized he was being ignored and his temper flared a bit.

"I'm not just going to go away, you know," he pointed out touchily, "And I wouldn't continue to ignore me if I were you."

It wasn't entirely a threat, but it wasn't not a threat either.

"What would you do if you were me then?" Jaime said. She didn't stop, but she did slow down and look at him so he'd feel less ignored. She supposed ignoring the boy who could (supposedly) twist you up probably wasn't a great idea, anyway. "I ... really don't think we have anything to talk about. I'm not that interesting."

Which wasn't to say he didn't think he was interesting ... maybe he'd just want to talk about himself. She'd listen. And look for ... people.

She started to ask herself where people were. Likely people. She relaxed minutely when she realized Jayne was here, and was dismayed to find Kaylee was, as well.

"I could make you more interesting," he offered, "People could come from miles around just to see the twisted lady. It'd be like a circus." He paused. "It'd be painful, though; I'd have to retwist when it wore off."

He narrowed his eyes as he watched her, wondering what she was doing. It looked like she was just walking, but something was off. Shrugging it off, he kept following her.

"Hey, wanna see me bend something?" he asked, almost excited.

"Um. Sure," Jaime said. Mal wasn't here, but Chase was. Kat was here, but Lily wasn't. Pepper wasn't. River was. What the hell? That was like the weirdest fricken lineup. Clearly not a kidnapping case.

"As long as, you know. It's not me." She tried to think of other people to be here, and to locate them when she found them.

"If I twisted you, you couldn't watch," he pointed out helpfully, "I just need to find something. A rock, or ..." He rustled in his pocket. "... here."

He held out one of the rocks he'd found at what stood for a beach here. He'd found it interesting enough to keep and had stowed it in his pocket for safekeeping. Holding out his palm so she could see clearly, he concentrated a bit, nose wrinkling slightly with the effort. The rock began to corkscrew in the middle, thinning out a bit as Aiden twisted it tightly.

"There," he said proudly, "It's still a rock, but ... twistier."

Oh, christ. Jaime admired the rock politely, flashed a slight smile, then looked away. What if he seriously tried to do that to her? Was there any way to stop it? Not that she'd be able to, regardless, but it'd be nice to know that there at least was a way.

Hunching her shoulders a little, Jaime made her way out of the barracks, presumably with Aiden in tow, to head toward the mess hall. Her lips parted, and she nearly asked him who was usually in there this early, then decided it wouldn't matter if he gave her a list of names. Unless he provided descriptions, and one of those descriptions was 'looks like Mal', it wouldn't help anyway.

Maybe she'd be lucky and there wouldn't be anyone there at all.

Easing into the second building, she inhaled. It didn't smell as good as their cafeteria, and she reasoned Riverfell just didn't have it as good as they did.
