Lizzy felt a shiver run down her spine. A vampire. But he hadn't tried to attack her or suck her blood yet, so she had to reason that he wasn't going to any time soon, and licked her lips absently, continuing to move toward the greenhouse, not realizing there was no one inside yet.
"Are you... one of the sparkly kind?" Lizzy asked curiously, peering at Spike. He didn't strike her as a sparkly kind, but then - there wasn't a lot of sun here. Maybe he did sparkle.
House was hobbling along the grounds, figuring that he'd made the right call when he'd opted to stay in the other illusion. He'd opted to stay in the other illusion, right?
Huh. Maybe he hadn't.
He spotted two kids moving toward a building, wondered if he recognized them, wondered if he cared, and started hobbling in their direction. "Hey!" he called out as he approached. "Hey, you have any ETA on when this stupid dream is going to end? Because I've got patients to diagnoses, you know. Can't be just sitting around all day sleeping."
Lizzy peered up in confusion at the strange man that had approached them, moving to hide behind Spike's leg, peering up at him nervously. She was exceptionally skittish today.
Spike paused, because it was politely, and while they waited for the man to approach, he answered Lizzy's question. "Not one of the sparkly ones, no. Bit of a joke, those sorts are. Not proper vampires at all, really."
He nodded to the man's question. "Midnight, mate. So the story goes at any rate. That's the usual sort of plan." He rested a hand lightly on Lizzy's head when she hid behind him. "'less you're from here to begin with, in which case, it won't end for you."
He thought he recognized the man from DauphinMare, though he'd never met him - and it could just as easily be a body double.
Lizzy managed to stick her head out a bit from behind Spike's leg, glaring at House.
"You're not sleeping," she accused. "This isn't a dream."
House rolled his eyes, brandishing his cane at the young toddler, and looked up at Spike in a way that suggested he thought Spike should have more control over the kid, as her apparent guardian before turning his head back to address the kid. He'd have knelt down if it didn't hurt so much, since he'd been unable to find a MedLab to steal vicodin from so far, so his leg was hurting him more than usual.
"Listen, kid," he said gruffly. "I don't know why I'm dreaming you up, what purpose you're supposed to serve, but if it's annoying the ever living hell out of me? You're doing a bang up job."
His eyes settled on Spike again. "No, the original place was that DauphinMare crap. Guess I needed to see the other side for one reason or another. I solved the case long ago. It's Hereditary Coproporophyria," he beamed like he'd accomplished something incredibly amazing, and the other two should be suitably impressed, though he didn't really expect them to be.
"Right, mate, I've got no idea what you're on about," Spike said, bleached brows arching a little. He absently shifted a little so he was more squarely between Lizzy and the man with the cane.
"I'm glad you solved your ... whatever you were working on, but we're from DauphinMare as well. Been transported over to the other side, 'parently for the day. We'll be back tonight, and then you can ..." he made a gesture. "Go home."
"Tried that already," House said with a shrug. "They said I wasn't dreaming. Funny thing is... the people in dreams very rarely outright tell you you're dreaming. So when they lied about that, they had to lie about other things. I don't believe in any of this crap."
He nodded his head though. They were both from DauphinMare. That was interesting.
"Isn't she new, though?" he asked, peering toward Lizzy. "I mean, come on, welcome back."
Lizzy just scowled at House, clutching tightly to Spike's pant leg.
"Yeah, all right, she's new. She an' her ... guardian, came over when Ice was visiting this place. So what of it?" He regarded House curiously. "Pretty new yourself, aren't you?"
Which was irrelevant, he supposed, and he shrugged his shoulders slightly.
"As for this not bein' a dream, anythin' we can do to prove it isn't? No, because you'll say, whatever we say, well, isn't that a fucked up thing for me to be dreaming about, and you'll just argue it."
He paused, then glanced to Lizzy. "Pardon my French. Probably shouldn't be usin' words like that 'round a bit like you."
House crossed his arms, not really liking that insinuation. "At least I'm new over there. Isn't that the point of this game you nuts are playing? Good guys versus bad guys and she's -" he pointed to Lizzy - "A bad guy if she originated over here."
He didn't really think that. He was just amused by how defensive the both of them were getting over it. Her with her body language - and if this guy wasn't the guardian, then what was he doing watching over someone else's kid? Annoying do-gooders - and Spike with his words.
"Nope!" he said when Spike asked if there was anything that could convince him this wasn't a dream - and that was probably for the best, anyway. If he knew it wasn't a dream... wasn't like he'd take it terribly well.
Lizzy scowled at House, and was close to arguing with him that he was being a stupid head and that he wasn't ever going to wake up because he was really here and not dreaming when Spike apologized for his language. She shook her head to indicate that the apology was largely unnecessary. It wasn't like she hadn't heard worse, particularly with being around here.
"People change," Spike said before he regarded House pointedly. "Well, some people can change, I guess would be the better way to phrase it."
He stroked Lizzy's hair lightly before he nodded toward the greenhouse. "We were just on our way to look at some pretty flowers, mate. You're welcome to come with us an' see what sort you've dreamed up for us to look at, yeah?"
"You don't have to be polite and invite him," Lizzy pointed out, easing a bit away from Spike - though not terribly far - now that it had been proven (or to her, at least) that House was just an ass an was not going to suddenly sprout fangs and attack, she was a bit more at ease. Plus, he was from their side. That meant good things, right?
Their side. She grinned a little at that. She'd been there for, what? One day? But it was her side now in her mind, too.
"I mean, he was rude first," she pointed out stubbornly.
House smirked a little at that. He didn't really have any interest in seeing the flowers, but if it would annoy them - or one of them, at least - to have him tag along, he'd do it.
"Why not?" he said airily. "People are always saying that I should take more time to just sit back and smell the roses. Maybe this is what they were talking about?"
It was clear from his tone that he didn't think this is what they'd been talking about at all, and knew it. But he supposed they already knew that about him.
Spike snorted. "Yeah, all right, Sparky. Come along then." He reached out for Lizzy's hand. "I know, bit, but if we don't invite him along, he'll follow us anyway and likely knock things about with that stick of his, yeah? Besides, we c'n be the bigger people and overcome his rudeness." His brows arched before he glanced to House coolly.
"Let's hope there's some roses in there for you. Ones with big thorns. Might stick right up your nose. Maybe then you wouldn't be so set on the idea this is a ruddy dream."
Lizzy giggled a bit at the Sparky comment, taking Spike's hand when it was offered and sticking her tongue out at House. She didn't think that House was all that clever or funny. But Spike was. And she thought that she wouldn't mind seeing House have some roses shoved up his nose. Maybe then he'd stop saying and doing things that were clearly asking for it.
"The fact that you are gullible enough to buy into this other world crap right away should not reflect badly on me," House pointed out, before he shrugged. "And what makes you think just because you're polite I won't knock things around with my cane? I'm just as capable of hitting things when people are polite to me as when they aren't," he said smugly.
He ignored the roses comment, though, having nothing particularly witty to respond with at the moment, which annoyed him, because that sounded like one of those comments he'd think of something really great to reply with later.
"The fact that you're too stubborn to believe there are things outside of your grasp of reality shouldn't be having such an impact on my day, but there we have it," he continued with a slight grin.
"It's not a dream, mate. Believe it, don't believe it, no skin off my back, but it is what it is."
Upon reaching the greenhouse, he drew the door open for Lizzy, to let her in first. He glanced then to House, brows elevated as he wondered if the other man was going to join them or not.
Lizzy giggled when Spike held the door open for her, skittering into the greenhouse immediately, her eyes drifting over the various plants inside, and looking for Daisie still. She slipped down onto her hands and knees, crawling under the various tables looking for her friend, who might be hiding. Or she was really looking for any pairs of feet that she happened to see. She'd like Spike deal with the grumpy doctor.
House paused, thoughtful at Spike's words. He smirked slightly, nodding his head a bit. "Touche," he agreed to the comment about affecting Spike's day. But he did move forward into the greenhouse, surveying the plants critically with a raised eyebrow. He wondered what use a bubble with no sun would have for a greenhouse, but opted not to ask.
"So..." he trailed off. "This is what your side does for fun around here?" he asked with a small smirk.
"Our side? We're on the same side, mate," Spike pointed out. "We just happen to be abducted onto the wrong one for the time being." He watched Lizzy scamper off. "Careful, pet. Don't hurt yourself on anythin' in here," he cautioned her before he returned his attention to House.
"But yeah, doesn't really look like there's a lot to do by way of fun 'round here. No wonder everyone's retreating to DauphinMare," he muttered. Not that he minded, really; if they won a victory by default, so be it.
Opting not to point out he'd just said that in the hopes of getting a rise out of the other, he rolled his eyes to Spike's comment about them being on the same side. "Sure, you say that now," he said, in his childish kid-on-the-playground voice. "That's what you'd say if you were from this side anyway. Everyone's trying to get back. Likely because this place is so BORING."
Lizzy peeked out from behind one of the tables near the back, giggled a bit and nodded before disappearing again behind another one, playing some sort of imaginary game with herself where she was chasing someone around. It had been something she used to do a lot in the castle.
He gave the last word a bit of extra enthusiasm. Then frowned slightly when Spike started watching out for Lizzy. "What are you, like her guardian in training?" he said, mildly curious. The black trench coat and bleached hair meant that Spike didn't strike him the parental sort.
Spike shrugged. "Hers isn't here. Someone's got to look out for her," he pointed out. "Can't have jerks like you making her cry or somethin' like that."
His eyes flicked to Lizzy once, though he was mostly using his ears to keep track of her - her breathing, heartbeat, making sure she was all right.
Leaning against one of the long tables, hands braced behind him, Spike studied House curiously.
"So are you always so grumpy, or is it just the extenuating circumstances that's put a bee in your bonnet?"
"Are you... one of the sparkly kind?" Lizzy asked curiously, peering at Spike. He didn't strike her as a sparkly kind, but then - there wasn't a lot of sun here. Maybe he did sparkle.
