For a long time I used an old black umbrella given to me by an actor friend of mine. The story is thus: I went to a concert he was singing in while I was sick as hell and had to wait out in the rain for the show to start. When he went in he saw I didn't have an umbrella and said, "Why don't you have an umbrella?! It's raining and you're sick!" Then he proceeded to take his own umbrella inside. The girl I was with burst out laughing as soon as he was gone because that was so typically him. After the show, though, when it had stopped raining he insisted I take his umbrella home with me because I was sick.
Anyway, this was while I was away at college, so it was the only umbrella I had for the next two and a half years. It leaked.
Here at home I prefer a plain black umbrella that has "MoMA" written in red on one panel. I think we got it when we became members there? It used to have confetti plastered onto it because I took it with me to Broadway on Broadway one year and at the end of the show (when they released 32094823904 pounds of confetti into the streets of Manhattan) it started to rain.
I don't know why I felt the need to tell you all about all the umbrellas I've owned. (Well, I guess I'm leaving out the Minnie Mouse umbrella I had as a little girl and the pink rain parasol that my best friend in preschool gave out as a favor at her birthday party one year.)
