Normally I hate Mother's Day, but yesterday was the best Mother's Day ever. the Women's Center sponsored a big brunch for all the student moms. It was a huge success. Lots of moms turned out, everyone was well fed and content. Someone from the Craft Center came and the kids did origami for their moms. There were flowers and gifts for all the moms and little goody bags for the kids as well. I must have made close to 300 pancakes.
I suppose I should explain why I hate Mother's Day so much. As a single mom of two small people who have no money of their own, the day is typically bare of meaning for me. I have always felt that Mother's Day was for married moms or those with grown children-- people in their lives who will actually do something more than paste macaroni to construction paper. I don't begrudge them that-- all mothers should be appreciated. Frankly I'm just jealous, that's all. Little kids don't typically have the resources or the sensibility to do much for their mother's, even if they do appreciate them very much. Moreover, I usually spend the day being pissed off at the two people in my world who don't even care to be involved in their children's lives, much less call and thank me for raising them almost completely on my own. In short, the second Sunday in May is typically quite bitter for me.
But this year was different. I conceived of this brunch event because I figured I couldn't be the only mom who harbored such feelings. I thought this way at least some moms would get the chance to have someone else make breakfast and keep the kids busy for once. & that's exactly what happened. It was great to hear from moms who felt the same way that I have always felt about the day and see them finally have a good day for themselves. Even though I didn't get to eat until the end and my pancakes were cold by then, it was a real kick to bring a bright spot to the lives of so many people.
When I got home in the afternoon, I got my Mother's Day gift. One of the neighbor's helped The Girl put together a gift basket for me full of all kinds of yummy body care products that she makes herself. It has some sugar foot scrub, herbal cucumber soap, body powder shea butter body cream scented with lavender, lip balm and a bunch of other stuff that I can't wait to use. I also got a cute little homemade card from The Girl with a poem that she had written just for me and a paper flower that she also made.
Last night I showered with some handmade herbal soap, gave myself a facial with some french clay and olive oil soap (made by the aforementioned neighbor) slathered myself head to toe in neroli scented shea butter and had a very good night's sleep.
good things,
mother's day
