A lone woman walked down the street. One would wonder what such a lady was doing on the outskirts of town, where the streets were filthy with dust and the buildings dark and unfriendly. Truth be told, Susumu had no idea why he was there either. The city was unfamiliar territory, too unfamiliar during the day to risk walking about as himself. Who knew who he would meet- He wasn't allowed out of the Shinsengumi compound as his actual self unless it was night-time ( ... )

In all this time, Asch had made damn sure, though all his tactics of avoidance and stubborn insistence, that no one came to bother him. He'd been unusually cruel--even for him--to the replica; he'd alienated the Malkuth Emperor, had snapped at Guy, had done all he could to aggravate and drive anyone who would under normal circumstances have done their best to forget he even existed. He was good at that: good at disappearing. Sometimes trouble--annoying trouble, damn it--found him easily enough; but for the most part he kept to himself and he kept himself away from the distractions.

He worked better on his own. The locals didn't bother him; they went about their business like he wasn't even there. Besides, he didn't want to see anyone here--didn't want anyone to see him here. Showing every weakness under the sun. Failing.Van would never have accepted it. It was pathetic. Ridiculous ( ... )

He walked a bit closer, keeping his eyes on the redhaired figure, but also keeping a decent distance. Any civilian knew to stay out of reach from a warrior when they were training- It was common sense. Samurai were tempermental, and didn't like to be distracted. Especially not by a woman ( ... )

Asch's head lifted immediately, shoulders stiffening.

Oh.

It was a woman.

Then again--Legretta was a woman, and she could do some damage when hard pressed. Never underestimate anyone, even a child. Ion was only a child, and even the replica would have taken Asch out in an instant if he was off his guard.

Eyes narrowed, Asch assumed a defensive stance, voice rough from training, dry. He was thirsty--how long had it been now? How much had he slept the night before? His fingers were cramped and stiff around the hilt of his sword. "Who're you?" he grit out, too hoarse to shout. There was a vein of some deeper weariness beneath.

He had to assume this...this woman, whoever she was, had come in on the latest ship. He'd seen it on the distant horizon when he'd begun to practice that morning, just after dawn.
