Stevie was an efficient kitchen gopher and a quick study for basics, but after this one night not too long ago he'd been even more silent and sullenly withdrawn than before. Especially around Jilly. He couldn't really talk to Jilly and not know how much of it would get back to him. So he followed orders and spoke only when provoked.
Mornings found him coming from a different direction than the Kent house, and he didn't bother to hide it either.

Kobato always tried not to treat Tim like he was made of glass. But being around him made her heart sting. She took the opportunity to gently squeeze his shoulder or pat his hand, and leave him extra sweets. He looked so slim lately. She still had to repress the urge to just crush him into a hug. But, she was managing.
"Will you help me with these petit fours? I'm not allowed to to the pretty top part."

Kobato was like a mini-Jilly. Only shy. And he didn't have to worry about who she lived with. He missed Kisa less with her around.
So he nodded, examined the sample, and picked up the little piping bag. "How come?" He didn't look away. A bare minimum of talk kept Rukia from smacking him for being rude.

Kobato sidled up next to him, gently cupping his hands over his. It looked for a moment like she was going to guide him into the fine loops and curls on the piping, but it came out looking as if it had been sprayed with silly-string.

He imagined Bart running over the miniature lines, looping in and out and around the pastry like Billy Keane. He huffed, and set her hand back on his.
"Your moves are too big. Here." This time he guided, steady and flat, to make a plain cross on the next one. It wasn't delicate or intricate, but it looked sort of professional.
Stevie's behavior had become something for Rukia to observe over the past several days. She had kept her gaze on him throughout her duties, though not obviously so. Outwardly she treated him no differently, though she would schedule the tasks so he would be working with those he knew. There was still much she did not know about him. Would being around those he cared for help him? It seemed to do little good.
She knew very well how stubborn some could be in dealing with their problems. A certain orange-haired young man was not so different. There was the need for direct action.
She had been patient up until that point, though her frustration had grown. With no trace of hesitation and seemingly ignorant of whatever task he was doing, she swiftly grabbed his forearm to drag him behind her. Quick steps pulled them in the direction of the back office. Her voice was firm and left little room for protest.
His first reflex was to dig his heels in and twist his arm, basic aikido that worked when your opponent was at normal human strength. His feet skidded across the wooden floor hard enough to leave marks. When that didn't work he pulled back just enough to keep his arm from being dragged out of its socket and changed the angle so his feet were sliding, not skidding, and by that time they were in the office and the door shut.
Stevie wriggled out of her grip as soon as she let him, rubbed his arm a little. "... Yeah? What."
His reaction did not go unnoticed. Although Stevie had acted as a hero in the past, emulating that of his older brother in serving others- he was still a boy, after all. He was not immune to fear and pain.
"Fool! Do not avoid the question," She said. Her tone was impatient and direct, though not harsh.
". . . You're... pulling me in here to talk?" he guessed, his voice faltering a little as somewhere in his stomach there began to unfold a sort of sick dread. He couldn't talk about... the night stuff. Or the lack, the way the only Robin out on the streets had been that-- not thinking about it.
Which left him one option, one story to hide behind. The dead certainty that Yoite would (eventually) forgive him didn't seem to help.
He slanted his gaze away, muttered his words, narrowed his eyes in unfeigned pain and made sure to heave a sigh. "Most people don't expect you to be all sunshine and roses when you lose family."
He also hated himself a little, and tried to ignore how true that really was. Sure didn't seem like anybody but Jason was on his side anymore.
Her gaze was carefully held on him, a small frown coming to her face. She was unsure what he meant- Jimmy was well, as was Jilly. His guardian... She had not heard from him, though she had scarcely made contact with him in some months. It was entirely possible he was referring to someone not directly related, a close friend he had met in the city.
Her expression faltered somewhat at his words, faint concern coming across her features. "What?"
Rukia frowned, her piercing gaze watching him closely. She knew Yoite to be a friend of Stevie's, though was unsure how close a friendship it might have been. She vaguely recalled his name being mentioned in different journal entries going back for a time. It seemed they shared a closer friendship than originally thought- one that was now sorely missed.
She could relate far too well to that situation.
She did not doubt the pain it must have caused for Stevie. However... there were other aspects of his behavior that she felt were still not explained.
"I apologize," she finally said in a lower, softer tone of voice. "I know how painful the absence of a friend can be."
There was a slight pause before she spoke once again, this time firmer and stronger as it originally was. "You are simply going to shun the world? To be bitter with everyone around you? That is no answer for it. He would not want you to be this way."

There was little point in delaying it further. "What is going on, Stevie?"

"We're working in a cafe." he pointed out, just to play for time. There were so many answers to avoid.

"Do not be so surprised. You have hardly been yourself, as of late. It is not difficult to see that."

Even that much was enough to turn his wince to a scowl. He started to turn away. "Can I go now?"
