Darkrai knew that all too well and that's why he's always careful. It was what allowed him to slip through Cresselia's pathetic attempts at capturing him, after all.
It also applied to here, to this island, to this so-called temporary cooperation with the Grim Reaper, who, by the way, Darkrai noted, was taking so long to arrive. Using each other for benefit was the root of it all and Darkrai attempted to take all he could while he is still unable to completely utilize all of his powers.
