WHO: Kurama and Hakkai. CLOSED.
WHAT: It's Kurama's turn for a nightmare.
WHEN: Late night.
WHERE: The apartment over Paradise Blossoms.
There are deep brown eyes in Kurama's dream, eyes that he remembers well, and misses more than he could ever have imagined. The first human eyes who know him for what he really is, and yet...seem not to mind. Eyes whose owner look at him, at his mother, and know that what he says is true - that he loves her, that he would willingly give up his life to save her, even though he fought so hard for it, fifteen years ago.
In his sleep, Kurama smiles, remembering how hastily everything changed. How he found himself working for the very people who had been trying to capture him, to lock him away - for life, if they could. How he knew Hiei would never change his mind.
And suddenly, the smile turns into a frown. Because now he's remembering feeling that dangerous flare of energy, that knowledge that Hiei isn't holding back. He remembers running to that abandoned warehouse as quickly as his tired feet will carry him - he still hadn't recovered entirely from that run-in with the Mirror - and finding that Hiei has done what he could never have expected. That he has taken a hostage.
Kurama takes in a ragged breath and turns over in bed as he remembers hearing the fighting beyond some stacked boxes, remembers rounding the corner at a dead sprint and seeing Yusuke hanging there, at Hiei's mercy. He remembers hardly thinking before he moves, knowing that he'll survive this - but Yusuke won't. That it's entirely up to him now - and that he owes Yusuke the greatest debt he could ever owe anyone.
In his dream, Kurama throws himself in front of the sword, and as he lies there in bed, the scar tissue on his stomach tears itself open - all the way through his body.
He wakes with a ragged gasp, and when he automatically tries to sit up, he has to stifle the groan of pain. He reaches down to his stomach, not wanting to believe what has just happened, but when his hand comes back slick and dark with blood, he knows it's true.
