It wasn't often Lily woke with a craving at some indecent hour of the night, but tonight she had. She needed something ... sweet. Definitely not chocolate, she decided as she slid on her robe and moved out of the bedroom. Remus would be fast asleep now, sick-- or so it went-- so she hadn't bothered tying the sash of her robe around her waist as she sauntered in a groggy, half-asleep mess with tousled hair down the stairs.

It was curious, his condition. Severus had always had his suspicions. Lily wouldn't deny thinking of them every once in a while. Often times, she was positive something strange was going on, but it wasn't her place to pry, so she simply never asked. Or spied. Or took much care in assuming. Remus had a right to his own secrets, and so far she'd been given no reason to worry.

Not one reason to worry at all.

Until she turned the corner into the kitchen to find a werewolf nosing through the icebox. Quiet, Lily. Quiet? That wasn't a problem. The woman was stunned into speechlessness.

Carefully, she fumbled through the darkness for something-- anything. Her wand was upstairs. The next best thing was-- YES! A ... candle. No. Something else. Something more.

There. Thick. Heavy. A book. Probably Remus's. She crept closer as she prepared her attack, and tossed the book at its head. It hadn't exactly occurred to her that attacking a strange creature in the middle of the night was not an entirely good idea.

Until after she'd done it and reality hit like a brick wall.

Oh.

Moony had just been trying to tear open the bag that contained the sandwich. He could smell the ham and pepperoni, and even if it wasn't raw it was still making his mouth water. After all, he'd had nothing to eat since last night around this time. He was so engrossed with trying to get at the food, that he didn't even hear Lily's delicate footsteps creaking on the staircase, or even smell her when she entered the kitchen.

Oh, but her presence was made evident clearly enough when a searing pain struck him right on the side of the head. There was a pained whimper from the wolf as the force of the book sent him skidding against the kitchen cabinet.

He didn't even stop to see what had made the attack. His paws and nails skidded across the tile, and he could smell his own blood dripping from his head as he darted back to the basement door and tumbled down the wooden staircase. He dove underneath his bed and whimpered quietly, trembling.
