*~*~*
Ah humans. Such silly little pitiful creatures. They trusted their superiors, they clung to their hopes that all would be well despite everything crashing down around them. Silly little pitiful creatures who believed a good man was a man who protected others and came home to a loving family every night. That he was a killer, that he was Death, that his 'daughter' was a killer, that his beloved Lady was a killer... All unfathomable.
They thought him safe and silly, frivolous and fantastically eccentric. Oh how Grell adored their simple minds. Humanity, for all their rare surprises, remained the same no matter where he ventured. Humans were given all they needed to lead a fulfilling life and yet they seemed to royally mess up their chances at every turn.
It made Grell laugh in delight, and his laughter was shared with a mortal who understood the very trappings of her own fleshly cage. She was his other half, she was him if he had been born the right gender. She was his love, the woman who stole his heart and held onto it even after she died. His Madam Red.
"Tonight is a beautiful night to die, don't you think?" She smiled and leaned back into his arms as he held her to his chest. There they stood atop a building overlooking the Husband's Alley, the moon behind them and a hundred stars littered amongst a thousand others in the night sky.
"It is indeed, Madam. A beautiful night for such ugly creatures."
Below them, prostitutes greeted their clients or lovingly sent them off with kisses and false tears for sorrowful partings. Women who abused their beautiful bodies by ridding themselves of the children the pair both longed to bear naturally.
"Let us paint the cobblestones a beautiful red," his grin became dangerously sharp, "and remind them Jack the Ripper prowls the streets once more..."
