Removing his apron and hanging it on the wall before he moved the plate of cookies to the living room, Lelouch called out towards the door, though he would be at it in a scant few secondss anyway.

"Just a moment."

Slipping on the mask was easy enough. It had been a few days since the loss, and Lelouch was, if nothing else, a consummate liar. His smile, his face, his body posture, his voice, even his expressive purple eyes, all were his accomplices in the deception, not a single one giving him away as he opened the door for Kairi.

"Miss Kairi. It's a pleasure to meet in you in person. Please, come in."

Stepping aside, the teenager gestured for the recent arrival to Rivelata to enter the household, never for a second letting his smile slip and betray the feelings that lay hidden.

"Better."

The answer was an honest one. Since Minako had visited, he had felt better... though not to the degree he was showing. No, it would be a long while before he would truly be that well again-- indeed, it had been a long time since he was truly that well, and perhaps he never fully would be again. It was hard to say.

Still, he did his best not to let the deception slip, not to let the facade falter, and beckoning her to follow, he led her through the hallway to the living room, gesturing for her to take a seat before he did, ever the gracious host.

"Please, have a seat. I've been experimenting with a new recipe. Triple chocolate chip cookies with extra butter. I was hoping I could get an unbiased opinion. There are ones with milk chocolate, white chocolate, and dark chocolate, though none mixed. I can get some milk for you, if you like."

Once they were both settled, whether she wished milk or not, and accepted or declined his offer, he smiled, sitting opposite her.

"I hope you've been settling in well?"

"I'm glad to hear it, and thank you. I do try my best."

Lelouch gave a warm, easygoing smile to the girl as he selected a cookie for himself-- milk chocolate chips, though he actually preferred dark chocolate. Every detail counted in a deception, and even if this was just a social call, there was no reason to let the deception slip, let the truth show. No, best to smile and pretend that, for all the world, if he wasn't alright, he was well on his way to being alright, even if that were the farthest thing from the truth.

Thoughtfully, he took a small bite from his own cookie, chewed, gave a slight nod, and then, after swallowing, responded further.

"I must admit, I'm a little surprised you aren't living with Sora and Riku and Nise."

Which he was-- just not nearly as surprised as he pretended to be. After all the losses that they had been through, particularly Sora, he wasn't surprised that the boys weren't entirely sure that Kairi wouldn't disappear on them again, and leave them all even more damaged than before.

It wasn't hard for someone like him, who forced so many smiles that it was almost more natural for him than real smiling, to tell her smile was forced. Even if he couldn't, the other clues, the way she looked away, the way she toyed with the hem of her dress... it was enough.

Besides. He remembered that the Kairi from before had lived with the boys; it was easy enough, now, to guess why she wouldn't be with them; either she had seen the damage her loss had wrought on Sora and Riku, or Nise had, and had bluntly told her as much. He could easily call her on it... but he wouldn't. Not now, anyway. No, that would only push her away. Better to bring it up gently, later, when she trusted him more, when she would be able to feel comfortable trusting him with those details of her life, and speaking with him about her unhappiness ( ... )
