The wrought-iron gates were ajar and calling him. Bored, he looked more closely at the gates, Indentions marked the metalwork, as though someone recently had kicked the shit out of them, punished them. Beyond the gates there was a path that led into green palm fronds and obscuring, mysterious darkness where, no doubt, the wild things lived. Beyond the gates you'll find freedom, they called, tempting but Farfarello was strong, so he waited.

He didn't tap his foot but it was a close thing. He had to wait because Johnny wasn't here yet and the jungle hunting trip was all his new ... friend's idea. They'd agreed to meet at the gates of Rivelata at sundown, and then they'd meet face to face for the first time.

Farfarello tapped his foot. The idea of having a friend was still new to him. And what if they met and didn't like each other and then one killed the other in a fit of homicide? That would be disappointing. Would Johnny carry scars like Farfarello? In their line of work a murderer's scars told of experience and stories. The human skin told so many stories ... How many lies could a person hide in their handwriting, their style of writing? Writing in a journal allowed a sense of distance ... He didn't know what to expect from this meeting.

But at the same time he was fairly certain this ... whatever would turn out well. Neither nature nor God had made Farfarello an optimist, but he had a good feeling about Johnny. They would hunt jungle creatures together and trade stories and maybe Farfarello would find the corpse of the hellcat which had dared hurt his team leader, and -- he didn't know yet. He would feel what to do when the time came.

In Farfarelo's experience it was more fun to seek vengeance in groups. Funny to think it but in Schwartz he'd learned how fun socialized murder could be.
