It took an absurdly long time just to find the waterfront.
Renji never asked for directions - he'd look like a doofus if he did, because he had some sense that everybody got to Rivelata from the beach. He just had no recollection of it. Besides - he didn't need directions.
He'd woken up in an unfamiliar house that morning, and so, of course, had immediately left it, as was his habit, but hadn't thought he wouldn't really have anywhere to go until he'd gotten quite lost. He'd walked down street after street, fingers interlocked behind his head, feigning utter relaxation, when in reality he was looking rather intently for the glitter of the sea. It was the only goal he'd had all day.
Finally, finally he saw the blue of water on the horizon, between buildings, and couldn't help speeding up a little to get there. He'd made his only goal of the day. Go me.
It only struck him then that 'the waterfront' Fay had referred to was a rather large track of land.
