Zach had met briefly with Hiruma and gotten the information he’d wanted from the meeting. He wondered absently if they would be at all successful, but he wasn’t going to concern himself with that just yet.
He was far more concerned with his own health at the moment. The bruises were fading, but still an unsightly reminder of how they’d botched their best chance. He sometimes woke at night with his heart racing, drenched in sweat, remembering the struggle to breathe, and vivid memories of how his vision had started to turn blotchy. There was no saved file to back up the program if he died, that much was clear. Besides which, he rather liked being alive, and didn’t want to die just yet.
“I don’t know how much use I can be to you. I’m not a combatant and I don’t want to be one. I don't have any special powers, and no one takes anything I say seriously--even when I'm actually being serious. What are we even trying to do? I just turned nineteen! I don’t want to die, and I’m not sure either of you can keep me alive... or what we're even trying to do anymore...”
He looked over at Jade and Mokoto, but didn't quite meet either of their eyes. He was obnoxious over the journals, like many with an online persona, but in person much less confident and unsure. His hand had crept to his hair had started to snag it into tangles.
“We can’t always rely on Motoko to do our reconnaissance… but I don’t have the things I need to build trackers or voice recorders or…anything at all... Even if I was willing to harvest them from Pepper. She’s not set up for that. I can't hack, that much is clear... even trying to build a journal from extra parts to hijack the system didn't work. As it is, keeping the battery charged to run the programs to crack the codes and keep the data on everyone organized is a nuisance for Motoko...”
