Hajime is the first son of a long, proud heritage of manly men. The men of his family as quite the swordsman and have consistently been the best. He is the captain of his kendo team but that's not all: until Asuka's appearance, Hajime was the number one champion in kendo. His failure to defeat Asuka has tarnished his family name so not only his pride, but his family's pride (and their regard of him) lies in him defeating Asuka.
Unlike Asuka, Hajime's family is aware of his infatuation with cosmetics. It is not revealed how or when his family found out (or if anybody besides his father knows), but he was forced to give up his hobby in order to become a true man. Cosmetics from that point on became a guilty pleasure for him. It's what he truly loves and when he does get to give a girl the make-over-of-a-lifetime, he goes into sparkle mode.
At the Lovely♡Beauty Fest, Hajime worked alongside Asuka as stand ins for the Samurai Five. (Hajime was totes Ginnezu and Asuka was Edo Murasaki.) Hajime expressed how Asuka would never understand him because he was so emo had to give up the things he loved and the frustration of still being surpassed even then. After their little show, he and Asuka ended up teaming up to give a girl a make-over in a strange turn of events. Hajime learned that Asuka is an otomen and for awhile, they had a sort of kinship going on. Unfortunately, Hajime is very sensitive with his pride so they ended on "enemy" terms again. To protect their identities as manly men, they took the alias of Ginnezu and Edo Murasaki.
Hajime's current win-loss score against Asuka in kendo is currently three-four. Other challenges he lost do not count toward this, such as the whole swimming "duel". Last thing he remembers is training on the beach with his kendo team during the summer.
Personality → Hajime has a complex about being the best. He has great pride and views Asuka as his opponent. He will do practically anything to duel Asuka but he's completely confident in himself no matter how many times he fails. He works hard toward his goal and keeps meticulous record of how many wins and losses he has against Asuka.
He's arrogant with his skills, cold in his speech, and straight to the point yet he's also upright. Asuka says Hajime lacks the Samurai Spirit but based off his actions, he tries to follow the Seven Samurai Virtues: rectitude, courage, benevolence, respect, honesty, honor, and loyalty. For example, he believes in repaying his debt and his obsession with being the best is in part due to honor. Yes, he wants to win, but he wants to win fairly. He will not take low measures or go behind somebody's back. He's very frank, prompt, and honorable. So, for example, Hajime technically won a little swimming match with Asuka but he says he lost because Asuka saved his life. He'll say stuff like this on his own volition not because he's putting his pride away, but because he actually believes Asuka is the victor.
Hajime is also an otomen, a man amongst men who has a taste for feminine things. His speciality is cosmetics and when it comes to their application, he's unrivaled. Equipped with lip liner, brushes, and the proper tools, Hajime is a reaper sent from Cosmetic Heaven to make girls over, kick ass, and take names. Despite having to "give up" cosmetics, he still knows what's in fashion and what makes a cute look. However, his hidden strength is also a weakness: if he sees make-up applied wrong, he simply must apply it properly. It's like OCD kicking in.
As well as his cosmetic skills, Hajime can kick ass in the literal way as well. He's pretty supped up physically and trains rigorously. One of his darkhorse physical skills is swimming. Because it is incorporated into his curriculum. Because swimming is important for any and all reasons.
Finally, I need to do a quick backstep to the larger Otomen picture before going on to this. Each character is quite stereotypical. So Hajime's role is the Japanese pride, glasses-wearing tsundere. In fact, Juuta makes fun of this in Hajime's second appearance: he says that Hajime is not a tsundere, just the tsuntsun, and then coins the term "tsun-sama" from the words "tsuntsun" and "ore-sama". So yeah.
Abilities → Cosmetic application, styling, and make-over skills and physical things like kendo and swimming. He doesn't have any magical abilities or anything, it's all habitually learned things.
