I only mentioned the military tactics stuff because large sections of the books would be of little interest to someone who doesn't find desperate sieges, night raids, and surprise victories through the use of daring military tactics to be appealing; many fans of Tolkien or Harry Potter or even Robert Jordan would be a bit off-put by the level of military sophistication employed, simply because its playing to a different set of audience expectations.

Despite all of the military stuff I've talked about (as fair warning, since I didn't warn you that Ice and Fire was ongoing when I recommended it), there are moments of heartbreaking beauty in Malazan as well. It's pretty much a blend of the best aspects of GRRM, JRR Tolkien, and Glenn Cook's Black Company once you get past the exposition of the first book.
