So this is a question from a place of deep ignorance, but did the health care reform include counselors to help walk people through the system? Or was that only for the original sign-up period?

Not sure if it is by state, but in Oregon they do. My barn owner works part time as one of those counselors, funded by a local nonprofit.

ETA: The other factor to consider is that I live 2/3 of the time in a small rural town that is far away from a large city, with a lot of elderly. There may be more grants/funding available for such circumstances. It's also a traditionally Republican area.

There are, but I was able to figure it all out myself before this. So I don't have that foremost in my mind...I should probably find one of those people, and I think I know where to go.

If an SF author had made up the American health care system in a novel set in a future dystopia, no one would believe such a Byzantine and unfair system could exist.

Unfortunately it seems to enable some companies to make lots of money out of people who are ill. What's more worrying is that the Tories seem to be trying to push our UK health system in the same direction, which is utter madness! Unless you're a big business who makes money out of sick people, of course. :(
