Also, listening properly? Is there a specific way to do that, like meditation or something? I'm afraid magic works quite a bit differently where I come from, so I've never really had to communicate like this before.

Meditation is one way, yes, though sometimes they'll call out to you. Usually to one person at a time; they either communicate telepathically or verbally. It is very different from ordinary magic; it's like summoning, save you are able to control the magic itself once it is granted to you.
Due to the recent situation in which people were possessed by these spirits, albeit it not being an ordinary occurrence, I would be a bit wary of trying too much out. We do have classes at the school to aid with learning magical control, though we are taking a small break from classes for the summer months.
