Nightfall
Through the veil of chaos, they ran; the longcoats barring the way died with blood in their throats. Amid the confusion, the shouts, the smoke, they eight disappeared. Through the belly of the tower, descending, descending. Flames and blood, crying, calling, it covered them as surely as a mother's embrace, and mother and daughters held hands as they followed through tunnel and turbine until the world went quiet and fresh air teased their senses.
Without pause for breath or tears, without respite for the weak or weary, they fled into the hills. The group was too large, too slow, and they were spotted. What men remained on the ridge guarded their escape. The clap of gunfire rang out as into the trees they faded, melting like moonlight into the thick tangle of forest.
There were survivors deep in the woods, falling back, deserting, it mattered not, not to DG. She had never asked these men, these women, to fight. She could see herself in their empty, haunted eyes; their dirt-streaked faces, their blood-stained hands were her own. Her shame consumed her.
As night fell, she found on the ground, tattered and abandoned, a badge of resistance. Made by loving hand, woven with hope and knotted with a fierce determination she'd never know. Not a word was spoken against it as she tied it around her neck.
