Weird Japanese Food: Conbini Finds!

First,  茎わかめ (kukiwakame--seaweed stems)

I think they might be sweet, but I'm not sure.  They were near the candy.

Oh, icky.  They do not smell pleasant, kind of vinegary.  And they feel slimy without actually being wet.

Speaking of slimy, let me introduce Slimy.

Ok, back to the seaweed stems.  Here goes nothing.

Truth:  I put it in my mouth.  I bit down.  It tastes gross, but I perservered.  But I couldn't bit through it.  It was rubbery beyond belief and tasted like vinegar play-doh.  Ok, tried again.  I ended up basically skinning it with my teeth.  It still tastes like vinegar play-doh.  Sorry guys, but I'm not going to try again.  But here, see a picture of what my teeth managed to do:

Yep.  That's it.  *throws kukiwakame in the trash*

Next up!

A different type of wakame!  I don't know what the difference is yet.

Ah, well, this one has typical Japanese packaging.  SO MUCH PLASTIC.

UGH.  I THINK IT IS THE SAME THING WITH DIFFERENT PACKAGING.

Except that this maybe smells worse.

EW EW EW  I thought the last one was slimy!  This one actually leaves slime on my fingers!

Terrible picture, but you can see the slime glistening.  Ew.  Do I have to eat this?

I PUT IT IN MY MOUTH AND TOOK IT OUT AGAIN.

Guys, I don't think I can do this.

No, I'm sorry.  I am chickening out.  It smells gross, it feels gross, and it looks gross.  I am not putting it in my mouth again.  Deal with it.

Ok, now for something that's been terrifying me for weeks.

A cheese Kit-Kat.

My friend Natasha brought this back from who knows where in Japan.  And it terrifies me.

OH ICK EW.  IT SMELLS LIKE CHEESE.

Duh, Lissa, what were you expecting?

*nibbles hesitantly*

You know, normally I would probably be making a face at this, but compared to the last two things, the sweet cheesy flavor isn't that bad.  I can at least finish the tiny petit bar.

Ok, and to wash it all down:  Mont Blanc Pepsi.

Smells... interesting.  Not a bad smell, though.

The taste is downright pleasant.

Bleh, except for the aftertaste.  My mouth tastes fine for a few seconds afterwards, and then gets icky.

Screw this.  I'm opening my imported can of Diet Dr Pepper.  Sometimes, the western world just does it better.

(and sorry about the low quality of the photos, it's really dark today, but the flash was screwing stuff up.)

weird food, what is this i dont even, slimes
