A few weeks ago I was introduced to Lady Gaga for the first time. Leave it to a gay forum to call her "Queen of the Gays." It spiked my interest and most of the comments were about her choice in style (it was a fashion forum after all). However, her "pop" appearence (short skirts, going' to church!) kept me away. Soon after I read a commentary by the local feminist writer (no really, that is pretty much her role in the newspaper) who praised Lady Gaga claiming that even as an intellectual, and shamed to admit it, she has been seduced by the "Queens" music. So low and behold, I looked up Lady Gaga.
I can appriciate someone with good fashion taste. No really, I mean that, she's often caught wearing the best of McQueen and Armani, it's enough to make a girl jealous. [The shiv is highly annoyed at the idea that I'm becoming interested in "high fashion." No, I won't go bleach blonde or wear uggs anytime soon...that's "low" fashion, perhaps for another post]. Anyhoo, she's got good rags, but does Gaga have more than just outward appeal? Well, not really.
Many people have hyped up Gaga to be a pop artist that is more than that. They're right--she's a SMART pop artist. She has cleaverly brought herself into the spotlight with help of the House of Gaga. Unlike most pop stars, she's self created, what you see is what you get. She also writes her own music (or at least has a hand in each one of them), and by that, I don't mean just the lyrics. She's played the piano since 4 and wrote her first ballad at 13. With all her talents, she is still a pop artist, she sells herself via sex and glamour, and has some RIDICULOUSLY catchy songs. Seriously can't get out of your head songs. I mean REALLY catchy songs. DAMN can that woman write a CATCHY song. But is Gaga doing anything more than that? Ehh...she's a lesbien? I'm not a music major, but I pretty sure that she's not doing anything "experimental" or "new" or "out of the ordinary" with her music. It fits the good ol' 4 bar blues, 4/4 count, standard pop song. Then again, so does the enitre industry these days...
So is Lady Gaga oh so amazing? Yes and no. The only thing different from her and other pop artists of this age is that she's self made--something popular music is seriously lacking at this time. Other than that, she's no different than your average Brittany or Christina. Time will tell if she becomes a Madonna, but honestly, who cares? I just can't wait to get the damn woman out of my head. No seriously, I've had her stuck in my head for 4 days...someone help...
HELP!!!!
