just something to ponder:
when we are born, we live a life of pleasure, a life dictated by the id -- the most primitive of our subconscious wants and wishes. of course, this must be repressed as we become older and are shaped by society, but it is always there. and as we mature, we learn to sublimate our primitive wants into socially acceptable behaviors. for example, if John wanted to steal candy from a store, he would sublimate that desire into playing baseball, and perfecting stealing bases. i find the same holds true in a small town. people have known each other since at least elementary school, if not from birth. there have been certain cliques established, certain titles recieved, certain rumors circulated -- all of which eventually determines the place you stand in your school. are you cool or not? and based on this, the students interact with each other.
