Summary: Classic story of a rich Georgetown, Washington DC girl named Amelia, who falls head over heels with the waiter at a middle-class restauraunt. Too bad he doesn't even know her name, and the fact that her father forbids her to even step one foot near the cafe!
Three girls were making their way down a pedestrian sidewalk in the shopping district of Georgetown. One of the girls turned and laughed at a delivery boy who crashed off his bike….and promptly ran into a post office mailbox herself.
“Son of a bitch!” Amelia hopped on one foot, her wavy blonde hair bouncing to the beat, red star clips coming undone. Today she had dressed in a pair of booty-short overalls with a dark red sweater underneath. Blue stockings covered her legs and she wore her infamous bomber jacket that her father had bought for her at a WWII auction. Her two friends burst into fits of giggles, and Amelia promptly whipped around and glared.
“Not funny you guys!” Amelia straightened up and fixed her hair clips.
“I don’t know Amelia, it was amusing to see karma hit you back that fast.” The girl with curly waist-length brown hair giggled. She shifted her purse to her other hand very slowly and adjusted her fake cat ears on top of her head. She wore a cotton white dress that flowed out just at the bottom, stopping above her knees. She wore knee-high brown winter boots that had cat bells added to the laces that jingled every time she took a step. Amelia had liked them at first, but they kind of got a bit annoying after walking for four blocks now.
“Very fast! Serves you right, yes?” Her other best friend grinned and flicked her platinum-blonde knee length hair back across her shoulders again. Why she wore that length of hair freely, Amelia would never know. It was such a hassle. She smiled at the thought of tangles at the end of the day. And no! She wasn’t jealous, thank you very much. She preferred her shoulder-length waves any day. The winter-loving freak wore her beautiful pink coat her father had bought at Betsy Ross, and Amelia had a hard time trying to stop staring at the thing.
Amelia huffed and turned to the girl with cat ears, “Athena! Just because you are able to avoid crashing into things due to you being slow as a turtle, does not mean you can laugh at others who do.”
“Don’t listen to her boring rant, Athena. She likes to hear herself talk.”
“And you, Masha!” Amelia flicked her blue eyes to her other best friend. Masha’s grin, if possible, got bigger and her violet eyes crinkled at the corners in delight.
“Yes?”
“You’re a bitch!”
Masha gave a wink and a mock kiss. No really, they were the best of friends. It was just a love/hate relationship. Maybe more on the hate side….possibly.
Amelia stuck out her tongue and turned sharply around, her own snow boots squeaking in the wet snow. She continued walking towards the restaurant section of town.
“Amelia?” Athena spoke from behind her, “why on earth are we going to a new restaurant when we have a perfectly lovely one already?”
Amelia stopped and turned around, rolling her eyes, “Becauuuuse Wang’s Tea House is mostly tea, and you know I hate that stuff. You can visit your boyfriend, Kiku, any time you want, just without me!”
Athena blushed slightly and fiddled with her cat tail. Yes, you heard that right, her cat tail. Athena was a bit obsessed with cats. She currently had ten at home, and fifty bazillion more that she cared for around Washington DC.
“You’re just jealous she has a guy, unlike you, the boyfriend less wonder for…oh yes, your whole life!” Masha chuckled, avoiding a punch to the chest.
“You’re the same, sunflower!”
Masha narrowed her eyes, her violet eyes going dark. Athena groaned and walked in between them.
“If you don’t mind, I’m freezing and would like to get inside.” With that, Athena started to lazily walk down the sidewalk.
Amelia and Masha exchanged looks and Amelia leaned over towards Masha, “I still think she takes a Tylenol pill every hour, that or she’s smoking some serious weed.”
Masha smiled while Amelia grinned back.
“What are two talking about?”
Amelia let out a squeak and both girls gave a startled jump. Athena stood behind them, only inches away.
“How the hell do you sneak up on us like that!?” Amelia clutched her chest, staring wide-eyed at the native Grecian. Masha only nervously shifted her pink scarf higher up on her face, making it cover her mouth to hide her grin no doubt.
“So?” Athena continued, ignoring Amelia.
“I was just asking Amelia if she chokes on every dinner since she has a motor for a mouth.” Masha pleasantly stated.
“What the hell!”
Masha strode forward with Athena, leaving Amelia standing alone.
“Oh! Ha ha! You were joking, right Masha?”
Amelia ran forward, screeching to a halt. Both her friends stared up at the deep green letters on the store front, and Amelia’s gaze followed suit.
“Queen….Victoria….Cafe…huh. Queen Victoria Café? Is this where you guys want to eat?”
Both girls nodded and, with a sigh, the three of them entered the restaurant. A pleasant bell rang as the door closed behind them and the three girls eyes went wide as saucers.
“Whow.”
“Hmmm.”
“Very cozy, yes?”
The interior restaurant made Amelia feel as if she were thrown back in time, to the Victorian era of England. Ah! Now the restaurant name made sense! The lighting was tall fat candles placed around the room as well as dim-light lamps hanging from the ceiling. The tables were covered in rich red velvet cloth and the chairs were pin-cushioned black leather it looked like. Beautiful paintings hung on the walls around the restaurant, most with family scenes such as a mother playing with her two-year old child out by a pond, their Victorian dresses flowing in a never-ceasing wind.
“May I help you three lovely ladies?” A soft and warm voice (even with a British accent!) pulled the girls out of their daze, and they looked in front of them. There stood a young-looking man with messy blonde hair and bright green eyes, but what brought Amelia’s full attention to….was the huge bushy eyebrows above his eyes. Were those things…alive?
“BWAHAHAHAHHA! CATER-“ Amelia was instantly silenced when both Athena and Masha slapped their hands over her mouth, though Amelia continued on.
“Is she…all right?” The man asked in concern.
“Oh yes. She just took a fall and hit her head just a short while ago.” Masha chuckled, digging her nails into Amelia’s cheek.
“Should she get that checked out at a hospital then?” Bushy eyebrows furrowed together.
“No thank you, she just needs some food to help clear the haze.”
The hostess still looked unsure, but got three menus regardless and led them to a table. Customers were money after all, and the Englishmen never had enough.
“Your waiter will be with you shortly.” The Englishman said, before turning and leaving to vanish back to the front of the restaurant.
“Whow!” Amelia exclaimed, looking at her already opened menu. “Check out you guys! This food is fucking cheap! Only sixteen dollars for a hamburger!”
“To us at least.” Athena stated, playing with her manicured nails.
Masha hummed a response while flipping through her menu. Amelia let out numerous giggles of excitement and finding so and so dish, and was going through the beverage choices when the waiter finally arrived. Amelia was too absorbed, however, to notice.
“Amelia!”
“AMELIA!”
“Huh? What?” Amelia mumbled, still intently staring at the menu.
“For fucks sake, the waiter is here to take our order. You decided yet?” Masha growled out. Taking care of the American was a chore all on its own.
“Oh! Yes! Drinks first? I would like to have a Hot-“It was at this time that Amelia decided to look up and actually make eye contact with the waiter. Her mouth had started to form a ‘c’ but she said something completely and horrifyingly different, “scha-hot!!”
Standing before Amelia was the most gorgeous man ever. In a black apron and white dress shirt, a confused man with wavy pale-blonde locks and luscious plump pink lips shifted on his feet in awkward silence. He had almost the same shade of eyes as Masha, except slightly darker. His eyes were hidden behind round glasses, but it added a cute charm to the man. He looked about the same age as Amelia, maybe one or two years older.
“Uhh…we don’t have that drink, miss. Did you mean hot chocolate?”
Talk dammit! He’s asking you what you want!
“Ah, Amelia?” Athena waved a hand in front of her face before giving up with a shrug. She looked up at the waiter, “I’m pretty sure that’s what she wants. I will have a glass of milk.”
“My turn? A bottle of Vodka!” The waiter stared down at Masha as if she were nuts (which she was sometimes), “Kidding! A glass of orange juice?”
“That works.” The waiter recorded their drinks down. “My name is Matthew and I will be your server today. I will be back shortly.”
“Matthew….Mattie!”
Matthew smiled hesitantly at Amelia, “Uh yes. You want something else?”
Amelia shook her head smiling. “Nope!”
“Then I will be back soon, miss.”
Matthew left, and as soon as he was out of earshot, Masha and Athena busted in laughter.
“What the fuck are you two laughing about!” Amelia flushed red.
“Someone has a crush on the commoner!” Masha giggled, leaning back to avoid injury by Amelia’s fist.
“Am not! And what about Athena with Kiku?” Amelia pouted, pointing a finger at the Grecian.
“He’s going to inherit a major company. His father does the Tea House for a hobby.” Athena yawned, sliding slightly down into her cushioned chair.
“Wha? Really?” Amelia asked in shock.
“Hmmhmmm.” Athena smiled.
“Nice.” Amelia deflated, sinking down into her seat.
The conversation turned to the topic of the upcoming college party, but was soon interrupted by the clink of their drinks being set down. Amelia felt herself blush and quickly looked down at her lap, avoiding looking at Matthew.
“here you ladies go. One glass of milk-“ Amelia heard the drink slide over to Athena, “One orange juice-“ another slide, “And one hot chocolate with whipped topping.”
Amelia glanced up finally to see her drink being carefully set in front of her in a cute Christmas mug. It even had chocolate shavings on top!
“Thanks…” Amelia mumbled shyly.
“You guys ready to order?” Matthew asked pleasantly.
“Drinks are fine!”
Masha and Athena stared at Amelia with wide eyes. Did she just blurt that?
“Uh, I mean….” Amelia fumbled to open her menu up again. “A hamburger?”
Amelia felt herself subconsciously smack her forehead. Smooth Jones.
Matthew got the other two girls orders before excusing himself to the kitchen.
Masha stared at Amelia in interest. Amelia looked up and met her eyes.
“Oh yes, you have a major crush.”
Amelia had no retort, because she realized right then in disbelief that it was one-hundred percent true.
