One Piece wiki Personality: When Luffy first ran into Coby, the boy was a cowardly little thing who'd accidentally gotten stuck on a ship with a terrifying pirate captain and had been unable to escape. His dream was to become an officer in the navy, but he believed that to be an impossible goal, especially in the position he was in. Heck, just getting away from that pirate crew seemed impossible in his mind. Then Luffy was brought on board, and he changed Coby's perspective on everything. Bolstered by the young pirate's courage and dedication to his dream, Coby decides to leave the pirates. Luffy helps him achieve this and reach the marines. Coby would later say that their meeting was destiny.
He's yet to completely lose the cowardly streak, but he's gained bucketloads of determination. His steadfast desire to follow his dream, motivated by Luffy's words, caused him to go beyond the original hopelessness of ever making a real position in the marines - falling under Admiral Garp's tutelage. When he finally sees Luffy again in Water 7, he's made a ranking member of the Marine corps. Not only that, but he's already learning techniques that only higher ranking members can usually learn.
Coby isn't brash, far from it, but he'll stand up for his ideals in the face of opponents far stronger than him even if there's tears of fear running down his face while he does it. (Thankfully there's usually someone around to save him before that gets him killed...) Otherwise, he definitely knows when he can't match up to the strength of someone and may flee rather than attempt to take them on.
He's generally an overly polite individual (down to his manner of speaking) and respectful as well as courteous. He knows his roots and doesn't think of himself as any better than those around him.
There's also a lot of potential within Coby. That fact that he's already showing signs of being able to harness Haki is proof of this.
Strengths: He has a strong will, and will ultimately stand up for what he believes him even if it looks like it might cost him his life. He was shown doing this against Alvida, the marines when they were about to shoot a boat with Helmeppo in it, and against one of the admirals when he thought the recent marine/pirate war had gone on long enough. It's this rising bit of spirit within him that's allowed his Haki to begin manifesting.
Weaknesses: Coby is still something of a coward. He tries, but he'll often scream and run before facing something dangerous looking head on. (He comes close to deserting at the battle at Ace's execution.) He's also rather naive and can be a little easy to take advantage of.
