If you are looking for a fun movie with good music that's simply enjoyable, go see Rock of Ages. It's not deep and you'll probably laugh in places the filmmakers did not intend, but that's ok. There's a lot of rock mash-ups with songs you will recognize. The singing varies and Tom Cruise isn't the fourth member of the chipmunks often.
Speaking of which, the main plot is a love story between two early twenty somethings that want to becomes rock starts. Happily they sing well. The Stacee Jaxx i.e. Tom Cruise plot line is secondary. I guess reviewers pay attention to it because it's Tom Cruise which is a shame because the lead actors are worth more attention. Stacee Jaxx is amusing but not the main plot. However the monkey was a good addition to the show.
The Alec Bladwin-Russel Brand romance is hysterical. Russel Brand was an inspired choice for Lonny. Catherine Zeta-Jones does well singing and dancing but somehow her choreography seems inappropriate for the character.
Overall, this isn't a deep movie and isn't as good at the Broadway show. There's more and different songs. The Stacee Jaxx character is significantly changed as are several plot points. If you love the show, think of the movie as "inspired by" and leave any expectations at the door. You'll be very happy and walk out feeling like you got a good value for your money.
