The Elizabethan braided stitch was da bomb in the late 16th and early 17th centuries in England. I'm not so up on it though. So a second practice piece found its way onto my embroidery hoop.
As you can see the stem needs something. The question is what? Taking some inspiration from early 17th c, I added speckling to the stem, motif-appropriate twisted chain stitch to the carnation, and some modern trellis stitch to the buds.
It looks better. Not sure if this is the final choice.
