Lauren was born on the other side of the veil. She was vague and hazy, too heavy and difficult to grasp. The clan mothers consulted and brought forth the patriarch. He called upon the clan’s wise woman who told stories of fairy children exchanged for better deals. The patriarch laughed, calling Lauren a prime candidate. The wise woman smiled and set looking for foster homes. In an age before SIDS, babies died for many reasons. The wise woman simply need wait. A few weeks passed as the old Fey checked and rechecked possible foster homes. Finally a suitable one was found. In its back room, an infant girl lay dead and yet undiscovered.
Quickly the Fey took her infant kith to the house. She pierced the veil and replaced the small, cooling corpse with a live baby. The body was whisked away to a burial grounds, while Lauren grew solid and focused on this side of the veil.
That morning, Lauren’s new mother rose to discover something wrong with her child. She couldn't say what. The baby was a bit longer but weighed about the same. If it smelled different, she could not tell. Perhaps it was the infant's looks.
She turned to say something to her man. He swooped in to grab the child, hoisting it overhead, while making silly noises the entire time. The mother laughed and the baby squealed. If there were lingering doubts, they were forgotten in the work of the day.
