Last night I attended my first "upper-division" English class. All summer I've been anxiously anticipating this class because although I completed two of the prerequisite courses needed to get in, I haven't taken Survey of British Literature. Seeing as how this class is all about Renaissance literature in ENGLAND, I was feeling slightly on the unprepared side.

I shouldn't have worried. I actually remember more about the Renaissance than I thought from my tenth grade world history class (shocker!), and while I haven't read any of the literature in the course, my professor is assuming that we haven't read any of it. Carolyn Brown is not only very friendly and un-intimidating, but one of the most passionate professors I have ever met. Normal first class stuff involves reading the syllabus out loud and pretty much detailing what's going to happen every day for the rest of the semester. Instead Dr. Brown went on a loud and impassioned rant about the reformation of the Church in the 1500's and how it all went back to King Henry VIII's fear of gynecocracy - "rule of women." And I use the word "rant" in the most positive way. After all, I rant quite often :)

Anyway, to make a long story as short as possible, we actually learned something last night, but that doesn't even begin to cover it. I think I should just say that this course is going to be the most interesting and thought-provoking of the semester. Expect to hear more about it.
