I'll just keep it to myself in the sun

While I am beyond thrilled to be starting culinary school soon (One more month!), there are a couple things that I'm not terribly enthused about:

A) Classes start at the beginning of July, meaning the height of summer vacation. Being unemployed has meant that pretty much every day is like vacation, but just about everyone is on vacation now and I won't be able to partake in the festivities. Case in point: my aunt invited me to visit her in Los Angeles during the Fourth of July weekend, and my relatives from New Orleans are renting a beach house in Florida the week after that and have invited the whole extended family to join them, and I had to turn down both invitations because of school. Why can't you start classes maybe two weeks later than you actually do, CCA?

B) Speaking of classes: they start at 7am. Which means that I'll have to leave the house at 5:30am in order to make it to class on time. My mom and I are making the early morning trek to the school tomorrow because she wants to see for herself just how safe it's going to be walking the streets of San Francisco at that hour. I think she's under the impression that homeless people are going to maul me on the BART train, at the BART station, during the walk from the station to the school, or some combination of the three. But what I don't understand is what she expects to do if she deems the area unsafe. Is she going to hire me a bodyguard? You'd think that at almost 24 years of age I'd be a decent judge in regard to my own safety.

Sorry if it seems as though I bring up my impending culinary school/program too often. It's just that it takes up a lot of real estate in my brain lately, especially since the start is so near. But I will make it up to you all by making sure to post lots of pictures of my assignments, a.k.a. sugary creations!

So, summer reading is upon us, which is exciting. zombres is sponsoring an epic Harry Potter group re-read that I'd love to participate in, but I'm not sure if I'll get the chance. I've already got lots of things I need to finish, including four library books, some of which I've renewed twice already. In my attempt to spend less money, I find myself grabbing way more books at the library than I should, including World War Z (I'm finally getting to it soon, Angie!) and Jane Bites Back, which has Jane Austen living in modern times as a vampire. Yeah, that one-line description doesn't sound that great, but I'm about halfway through the book and it's actually a pretty fun read. It gently mocks the recent vampire and Austen crazes (both of which this book is of course the product of) and its detractors, as well as bloggers and literary snobs. That said, the vampire aspect isn't done for the sake of sensationalism, unlike a Pride and Prejudice retelling that I've heard not so good things about wherein Mr. Darcy is a vampire. It doesn't feel like it's done for the sake of cashing in on a trend, but it doesn't take itself too seriously either. Thank you, Seth Grahame-Smith, for your quote at the back of this book, for I would have never picked it up otherwise.

On a final note before I pack it in for bed (5am wake up alarm, you and I are going to get well-acquainted, unfortunately): I kind of wish I were still a kid because you can get tons of cool stuff for free just for reading. As an adult, I mostly get comments along the lines of, "Wow, you like to read for fun. Good for you." Which isn't nearly as exciting as free stuff.

books, in the life
