I made a pie from scratch for the very first time last weekend. And it wasn't just any type of pie, mind you, but an apple-gruyère pie inspired by Pushing Daisies for Kimberly and my mini-marathon. Okay, so I altered the fruit in the filling from pear to apple, but I kept the cheese in the crust, which is what makes this pie special. Because this was my first pie, I was very, very nervous about the outcome. Would the filling be sweet enough? Would the crust be soft and flaky? I'm pleased to say that my worries were unfounded; the pie turned out great, and the gruyère was subtle yet managed to give off a pleasing flavor. Everyone complimented me on a job well done, and Kimberly's grandmother asked me to make another pie the next day with the leftover apples. I like to think that I did Chuck proud.
