Yuletide Letter '10

Dear Yuletide-shaped giftperson,

Thank you for entering my leopoard-printed den of inequity and Bruce Campbell fangirling! This is my second year doing Yuletide, and I think I have a good grasp of the ways of the Yuletide world. We'll get along just fine 'cause I'm a voracious reader, a reader who loves to read about all sorts genres and situations. I'm happily obsessed with the "what if" that results in fanfiction; I think exploring every canonical corner and crevice is a fun thing to do, and that's what fuels my own writing. THERE ARE PLOT SPOILERS IN THE GOLDRUSH AND MOONSTRUCK ITEMS, just to warn :)

So without further ado:

Stuff I Love:

* Romance. I'm a pathetic, hopeless romantic, and I love the process of watching people fall in love in a realistic, non-corny way. Something swoony'll always turn my head.

* Slice-Of-Life. I love it when characters interact. I love jumping into the headspaces of these characters post-canon and seeing what makes them tick. Therefore, I really enjoy watching characters go about their daily lives, hearing what they're thinking. Outlandish action epics are fun, but the ordinary staff of life I adore.

* True-to-canon portrayals. I don't cling to canon in any respect (AU is a friend of mine), but I love a story that explores characters from their portrayal within the movie/show/play/etc.

I also like slash, gen and het equally, and smut is a wonderful thing but absolutely not required.

Stuff I Dislike:

There isn't a lot that really disgusts me in a fic. In exchanges, I like leaving an author to create what moves them in a lot of ways; convincing writing in turn motivates my reaction. But the things that really tick me off are:

* Character bashing. I have no problem with villainous characters being called out for villainous behavior, and well-explained and thought-out negative actions by others. But "x-is-awful-because-he/she-gets-in-the-way-of-pairing-c" isn't my cup of tea.

* Rampant OOC-ness in non-AUs: Exploring the way a character might have turned out if they hadn't experienced some canonical event is just fine, but wildly-OOC behavior doesn't do anything for me.

* Angst without context. Angst when well-explained or thought out (or canonically works for a character) is just fine. Angst "just because" falls flat for me.

* Noncon. Some folks like it, but unless it's really well explored (IE: it explores how the event makes the person feel) it's not my thing.

Fandoms I'm Asking For

The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.

Oh, awesome and much-lamented show! "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr" was a tongue-in-cheek western with overtones of steampunkian aesthetics and supernatural and time travelling elements. It stars Bruce Campbell as the titular character, a Harvard-educated lawyer who's given up the practice to become a rambling bounty hunter. When his father dies, Brisco is called back to San Francisco, where he confronts both his daddy issues and his destiny as he fights to bring John Bly and his gang to justice.

Also along for the ride are Comet, Brisco's horse, with whom he has a unique bond (he can understand everything Comet's communicating with his neighs and whinnies, and explains it by saying that Comet 'doesn't know he's a horse'); Socrates Poole, Brisco's friend and attache, who hires Brisco to take care of the Bly gang; Lord Bowler, AKA James Lonetree, a fellow bounty hunter who evolves from a rival to a friend to Brisco throughout the course of the series; Professor Wickwire, inventor extraordinary, Dixie Cousins, a burlesque entertainer, revolutionary, conwoman and singer who evolves from a casual fling to a serious love interest for Brisco; And John Bly and his gang, a group of fearsome outlaws who murdered Brisco's father (my favorite member of the gang is the hilariously unkillable Pete Hutter, who's obsessed with his six-shooter. "No one touches Pete's piece!"). All are tied in some way to the mysterious Orb, an object that contains glowing green rods that give the holders great metaphysical power.

I seriously adore this show, so I would be thrilled with genfic, but my main 'ship is Brisco/Dixie (And if you've seen the extras on the Brisco set, you know even Bruce Campbell ships those two!). The show is amazingly complete in its short one-season run. You can watch Brisco and Dixie go from a casual fling to a possible commitment, and see Brisco and Bowler become real friends and partners. Therefore, I'd like post-series fic, perhaps futurefic. I wanna find out what happens to Brisco and Dixie after she comes back from China!

Goldrush: A Real Life Alaskan Adventure

NOBODY HAS SEEN THIS MOVIE BUT ME, I SWEAR. This is a Disney TV movie set in New York and Alaska at the turn-of-the-century's goldrush. It stars Alyssa Milano as Frances Ella "Fizzy" Fitz, an independent society girl who uses her clerical skills to become a part of P.T Madison's northward expedition to his goldmining claim in Alaska. Throughout the trip to the plot of land and during her time there afterward, Fizzy explores her independence and struggle to fit in - and her romantic options - among Madison's crew, and with Madison himself. Along for the ride are her rambunctious dog, and love interests Ed Hawkins and Barry Keown.

Oh God, this movie is SO ADORABLE. Fizzy is a true role model of independent awesomeness, her dog is kickass, and NOM Bruce Campbell in an Edwardian suit!

...Not quite that suit, but still...

I 'ship Madison/Fizzy and am still disappointed that they didn't end up together at the end of this movie. Sure, he was dishonest, but not the sort of dishonest that was malicious. Perhaps he could re-earn her trust and love? His biggest flaw was impracticality and dreaming without some solid ground beneath his feet. Would love to see some fic about it, either way....

Evil Dead: The Musical

This? Is the most hilarious thing to ever come out of Evil Dead fandom (and yes, I've seen the comics!). Ryan Ward's perfect take on Ash and the music and book are dead-on wonderful. It's raunchy, bloody, and highly ridiculous, and packed floor to ceiling with awesome. The plot compresses the events of Evil Dead 1 and Evil Dead 2 into a single experience, complete with comedic injokes and insides.

What would I like from this fandom? Maybe a little bit of equally-ridiculous post-play fic? Something centered on Ash's time in medieval England, which was left out of the play due to COFF COPYRIGHT ISSUES COFF? Ash/Sheila in that respect might be amusing, if you could make up a musical version of Sheila that's properly hilarious. I like Ash/Linda, but that's kind of impossible if you go post-canon, so do as you will! Also like Scott/Ash in this 'verse. Make it funny and a little ridiculous and I'll love it!

Moonstruck

For the fourth slot I had a hard time picking between My Name Is Bruce, Jack of All Trades and Moonstruck, but since I nominated it I thought I ought to pick Moonstruck!

A romantic dramady set in 1987 Brooklyn, NY, Moonstruck is an Oscar-winning motion picture focusing on the life of Loretta Castorini, a widowed who has repressed her capacity for passion since her first husband was killed in a bus accident (caused, her father insists, by the bad luck she brings to the union). She decides to marry her boyfriend Johnny Cammareri, a mama's boy whom she likes but does not feel passion for. When his mother takes ill, Johnny asks Loretta to invite his brother Ronny Cammareri, a volatile baker, to the wedding in his stead, while Johnny flies to Italy to attend what he thinks may be their mother's deathbed. Sparks soon fly between Loretta and Ronny, in spite of the guilt Loretta feels for the attraction. Meanwhile, Loretta's parents, Cosmo and Rose, contemplate their own infidelities, attempted and imagined.

This is one terrific movie, with one lovely ending, but I've wondered for years what life was like for the Castorini/Cammareri clans after the Loretta/Ronny marriage. Did the families successfully blend together? Did Johnny and Ronny finally make some sort of peace eventually? I'd like a post-canon fic detailing such things. Anything involving Loretta and Ronny's passion for the opera would be a bonus.

I hope I've offered you some assistance. Best of luck, and I'm sure I'll love whatever you create for me!
