5 minute pie, and other Thanksgiving mysteries

I'm about to make pumpkin pie for tomorrow and it occurs to me that America's strange obsession with holidays in which we gorge ourselves on excesses of carbs is made more amusing by the fact that nearly all holiday foods can be made in seconds out of a box or a can.

Last year I *SLAVED* over the pumpkin pie - I had to make it completely from scratch because New Zealand did not have canned pumpkin so I had to buy a pumpkin and dice, boil and mash it. It took a significant chunk of a Tuesday night.

This year, I bought a can of "pumpkin pie mix" which basically is the mashed pumpkin and all associated spices for pie, a can of condensed milk, a couple eggs, and a frozen pie crust. This is so easy, a monkey with no hands could do it...

America, your convenience culture never ceases to amaze me.
